Is this as good as they say?

Some compare it to Memories of Murder. Since it is my favourite korean movie I'm obviously excited for this one. Is it really that good?

Memories of Murder is one of my all time favorites hands down. I saw The Wailing with my friend who also loved Memories of Murder. For 5 days after watching the movie, I couldn't get it out of my head so had to see it again. This time on my second viewing I enjoyed the film maybe 10 times more. However unlike what I expected of my friend, he said he didn't like The Wailing as much as I did. He's the kind of guy who likes clear cut answers and dislikes misleadings and twists. I believe the real charm of this movie lies in its ambiguity and blurness which lead you to more thinking and questions without ruining the plot and structure. Although it's been 2 months since I saw it, I still have questions to which there's no clear answer except different interpretations I found on the Internet. I think The Wailing stands out in the list of my favorite films in that it's open to different interpretations, which I'm absolutely happy with.

It's a formidable piece of work but personally I don't rate it as high as memories of murder. The biggest problem is incoherence. You could be incoherent and still have an impact but the incoherence in this movie seems to service very little or no purpose.

If you are a guy asking so who was the killer? this is not a movie that you are looking for.

Yes.

I loved it.

It's haunting. The plot structure leaves it open, which to me was a strength, others may not like that. Great film!

Not by a long shot. Memories of murder is a contemporary Korean classic. This movie doesn't even know what genre it wants to portray, is way too long with unnecessary scenes which don't show purpose later in the movie, and characters which act goofy (nice in a slapstick, but annoyingly unrealistic in this setting)
