Stupid idea just to be different

Ohhhh, let's be different, and make van helsing a friggin woman. So dumb.

reply

I kinda have to agree, but still you'd expect that from SyFy.

reply

Do. Not. Blame. the. character's gender. because this is bad. This would be bad no matter what gender the Van Helsing is. Blame the bad writing, blame the over-used apocalypse trope. Don't blame the gender.

Think how different and unique it would be if a Van Helsing (male or female) was a wise, seemingly frail doctor who just knows the vampire weaknesses.

And they are up against a Dracula who could walk by day, who needs homeland soil, and could someone storms of rain or snow, while able to turn into a bat, wolf, or mist. That's the Dracula of Stoker's novel. Think how cool it would be to see someone beat someone that powerful with their wits alone, much like a Sherlock Holmes.

No matter the gender- the Syfy version is stupid. But to blame the gender, that is vulgar.

reply

A female Van Helsing is NOT the problme. A female Van Helsing does not bother me. The fact that with all the things wrong with it, the gender is your complaint, is vulgar, sexist, and immature. What the Hell is wrong with you?!?

A female Professor Van Helsing would work just fine. This is bad for other reasons. It's a cheap knock-off of Walking dead but with vampires in place of Zombies and using the annoying 2004 Hugh Jackman style Van Helsing but female.

Think how much fun it could have been if they had an older female Van Helsing in the style of Peter Cushing, Edward Van Sloan, Lawrence Olivier, or Anthony Hopkins.

Integra Helsing in the anime Hellsing is a great character (save for the chronic cigar smoking). And I've seen stage productions of Frank Wildhorn's Dracula in which Dr. Van Helsing was played by a woman. And it was very well done.

Van Helsing should be an older, wise, kind and patient doctor who takes on the forces of darkness because he has to, not because he has automatic weapons and martial arts training. Someone who is wise enough to know the vampire weaknesses. Tilda Swinton could do it. Hell, she LOOKS like Peter Cushing. It's a brains vs. brawn situation, not brute strength vs. action figure accessory style weapons.

But this... This Syfy show is a piece of crap, insulting crap with bad CG, no respect to Stoker's novel, dumbed down writing, and a tired and over used apocalyptic plot. And to use the gender as the reason why it's crap is just vulgar. Something I'd expect from a virgin living in his mother's basement.

reply

Not at all being vulgar, but why make van helsing female when it's supposed to be a man? Why not just make a whole different series with a female lead and call it something else.

It's because SyFy are cheap and want to try and ride off of the name.

I'm just getting fed up with it, not just this but other shows and films too, trying to change the main characters and others to be more diverse, what's the point?

Just stick to what was intended, If not, then just make a new IP, I have no problem with a female lead. But please keep it how the writer intended it to be.

The vulgarity comes from the rude, offensive, and out right stupid behavior of finding fault with the gender as if that is the problem when really it's not.

The concept is it's a descendant of the original Van Helsing, which, of course, means any gender will do. The anime Hellsing does a fantastic job with Integra Helsing as the head of the family line. She even wears round, wire frame spectacles like most depictions of Professor Abraham Van Helsing. But at the same time she can stand on her own perfectly fine.

If this is set in an alternate universe a female Professor Van Helsing of the original Dracula story also works just fine. There's no reason why it can't. The character wasn't exactly a sexual object. The gender should cause absolutely no change in the character behavior or interactions.

That's actually how the iconic character of Dr. Julia Hoffman of Dark Shadows (1966) was created. She was meant to be Dr. Julian Hoffman, an equivalent of Professor Van Helsing from the Dracula novel, whose original purpose was to defeat the vampire Barnabas Collins. Note: This was before the TV series decided to reform Barnabas and make of him the pivotal Hero with Julia being his trusted ally, confidant and the one person he'd scream for if in trouble.

It's because SyFy are cheap and want to try and ride off of the name.

Your ignorance is astounding. Syfy is cheap, yes, but the reasoning here is tied to NBC / Universal. That's syfy's parent company. And right now they are trying to kindle renewed interest in the original Universal Studios monster Franchise via re-invention as Goth Action franchise, the same misstep they did not learn from back in 2004.

I'm just getting fed up with it, not just this but other shows and films too, trying to change the main characters and others to be more diverse, what's the point?

This isn't a gender-inverted Classic Abraham Van Helsing (That could actually be interesting if it was done right). This is Abraham Van Helsing's descendant in a post Apocalyptic world with "magical blood" that can cure vampirism and makes her immune to vampire bites.

This is NOT a retelling of that God-awful 2004 movie though it has the same feel as it does and that's my problem with it. And you certainly can't be stupid enough to think this is an adaption of the Dracula novel from 1897, can you? So exactly which Van Helsing had their gender changed?

There have been female Van Helsings before.

Integra in the anime Hellsing (An excellent character if not for the chain smoking).

Jessica in both Dracula 1972 AD and Satanic Rites of Dracula from Hammer horror.

Mina Van Helsing in Frank Langella's Dracula (1979) who actually saves Dracula's life and is rewarded with vampirism.

This is not the first. And scarily the teenage Jessica Van Helsing in Dracula 1972 AD made more sense than this!

Just stick to what was intended, If not, then just make a new IP, I have no problem with a female lead. But please keep it how the writer intended it to be.

Tell me, how come you didn't say this when an Australian pretty boy was cast to play Gabriel Van Helsing back in 2003? Aren't you aware the character was a Dutch-German (with heavy German accent) with red hair going white, in his fifties, with the first name of Abraham (Bram Stoker's own real first name as Bram is a nickname). I'm pretty sure giving him an English accent, played by an Australian, and turning the elderly doctor into a young action hero "Possibly an angel with amnesia" is a bit worse than the factor of what reproductive organs the non-sexualized character has.

As I said, there's far bigger concerns than "OMG! Van Helsing shouldn't have boobs!"

Van Helsing also shouldn't be an American in a Post-Apocalyptic wasteland with automatic weapons, magical blood, and a hot young body flaunting blatant product placement for Subway and various soft drinks and candies.

I've seen women play the version from Stoker's novel. And other than changing the pronouns there's literally nothing different to the way the character behaves or interacts and there is nothing wrong with it. In fact it becomes fresh and new because it matches the book, which is so rare these days. But Alas, that's not the sort of female van Helsing we're getting. Someone should watch Dark Shadows (the 1960s version, not the Burton film) and check out Dr. Julia Hoffman or Integra Helsing from the anime Hellsing. Now that is Female Van Helsing don't right.

Don't worry, sport. We awful Fems won't steal all your characters on you. As a woman I am embarrassed that THIS is the female Van Helsing and people like you blame the gender instead of the really awful story and concept.

why make van helsing female when it's supposed to be a man?

Van Helsing is a family name, not a person with a specific gender. The most well known member is Abraham Van Helsing. This show is not about him. His character has not been genderbent.

I swear you people complain about these things without even knowing what you're talking about. Mantles can be passed down and family lineages can be explored with no problem when it goes to a straight white man, but if a mantle is passed to someone who isn't that, or if a story is told about someone who isn't a straight white man that belongs to a famous family name, this idea that they're just "pushing their agenda" or "not doing it for creative reasons" or "changing things for the sake of it" becomes so prevalent that the story isn't judged fairly on its own merits, or lack thereof.

This show looks lame, but a female Van Helsing has nothing to do with that.

Warning! The Monster is loose!

reply

Stop defending the show as if you came up with it... Acting all pro, who cares, it's a crap show that's it.

reply

Except it matters why it's a crap show. If the producers of shows and movies get the wrong idea about why something like this fails, then creativity may be stifled and the real mistakes will continue to be made.

People weren't thrilled about Superman Returns when it came out. It was a bit too boring at times, there were issues with Superman's characterization, and Superman and Lois Lane had no chemistry. WB got the wrong idea and assumed the problem was the bright tone of the Donner films and the lack of fighting and big action scenes.

So we got Man of Steel and worse yet Batman v Superman as a result.

Yes, exactly. Blaming the wrong aspect of something that is awful leads to terrible reboots because then no one truly learns from history and the wrong thing- the thing that actually had potential- is what gets stripped away and mistaken as being the fault.

I hate the show but I'm not stupid enough to blame the gender, that's called displacement. And that ruins attempted reboots later when they change the wrong thing and keep he same mistakes, as they clearly did with this, keeping the tone and mood that made the 2004 film awful.

This statement alone sums up why your opinion is pointless. No sane person would suggest that the pilot for this series and the 2004 film have ANYTHING in common, let alone tone and mood.

Dislike the show all you like but please, PLEASE make relevant and accurate observations to back up your dislike, not just drivel that sounded smart when you wrote it.

Exactly!

reply

Who cares if is a female or male character, as long as is realistic (within the context) and well written.

I didn't see the preview, but from what I understand, she's suppose to be just another kick-ass female 'warrior'. That tired trope that we've seen so many times before. And apparently this takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. Both of those aspects give me pause. I'll just have to see how it goes.
