Episode two wasn’t a prequel, they simply aired them in the wrong order, and that was a big detriment to the show.
Having watched what was clearly meant to be episode two first, I thought that the vampires were created due to a virus or something spewed by the volcano. Then the second episode, which was obviously supposed to be first, made it clear that vampires already existed and the ash cloud from the volcano merely made it possible for them to come out.
This out-of-order airing not only really messed up the story-line, it also also set up for disappointment because the virus slant was interesting; the ash-cloud cover was dull and made it look more like Strain.
