The scene was wrong, you're right about that.
Even if the bodies had to be buried that way for practical reasons (too many rocks on the opposite side of the mom's grave... or whatever >_>), I don't see what was so hard for the writers to write a decent and appropriate dialogue at the end. It just makes you wonder what part of Susan's tale Vanessa didn't understand or maybe she is as deaf as Sam.
The sad thing is, this episode wasn't made about Susan but about Sam. The writers were done with her character and too busy to make Christopher Heyerdahl shine. I assumed they would have taken more time on the loss of Vanessa's precious and only friend but I was mistaken, she just wasn't that important or worth writing a decent burial and farewell.
