I don't know why I like this show

but I do and I'm glad it was renewed. It's so bad on so many levels but it does what it needs to do each week. 

It reminds me of very early seasons of TWD with Alec as Rick

reply

They had different actor playing Rick Crimes in early seasons of TWD? Sorry I don't watch TWD until last year.

reply

No, Andrew Lincoln has played Rick Grimes the entire show. I've watched since the first episode. Not sure what the comment saying it was a different actor is about.

neptuneimph, what bosscain was saying was this show reminds him/her of season 1 of TWD but with Axel (he said Alex but it's really Axel) in the Rick Grimes role.

reply

Because it's consistently entertaining.

I'm kind of the same way. Although actually I think I do know why, because it reminds me of early seasons of TWD. Granted it is vampires instead of zombies, but it has a similar feel.

So I guess rather I have no idea why it is rated so terribly. I will admit that the first 2 episodes were definitely the weakest, in my opinion, and they initially stopped me from continuing watching. But I ended up giving it another chance a couple weeks later, and I thought it got a lot better after that.

I honestly think it's a pretty solid show now. It definitely started slow/rough, I think the fact that it throws you directly into the story with no context wasn't a good directing decision, but it recovered from that.

I like that it doesn't try to be funny, like Z-nation, but it doesn't take itself too seriously. And I like that it portrays most of the characters realistically. There aren't any 100% noble, virtuous hero types. And I like that it wasn't afraid to have the seemingly good guy, Axel, doing some arguably wrong things. It actually makes him feel human and not like a caricature.

I like Van Helsing. I look forward to it every Friday!

reply

I'm not sure why either, but I love this show.

reply

I wouldn't go as far as to say that I love it. It's more like a guilty pleasure :)

And I would also compare it to the first season of Helix, rather than TWD.

Is it because there's nothing else on TV? Is it because we like shows with Vampires? Is it because the show is not as bad as we think it is? Is it because there's really not that many great shows out on TV, and we assume this one is okay? Is it because we really don't have any taste? Is it because we hope for better and are always disappointed with each episode, and hope again for better with the next show? What's wrong with us???? Why do we like the show? Why is it that we don't even know why we like it?

I wondered the same thing, then figured out why I like it. It has characters I want to see what happens to. I like Mohammad and Susan and Flesh. I'm still warming up to Vanessa and will like her more when she accepts what she is and stops fighting it.

I also like that Vanessa's blood and saliva turn vampires back into humans, no matter how long they've been a vampire. With that in mind, I'm looking forward to when she turns an ancient vampire back to a human. That should be interesting.

There are central mysteries I also find intriguing, like who in their group is murdering people and why? Was it John? Doubtful. I also think the finger was planted because the second finger is still missing. I'm favoring Sam the deaf guy right now because I believe the group that took over claimed they had no intention of murdering Axel's group in the hospital, yet it was Sam who said he read their lips and told everyone else that they planned to execute them. And Sam tried to confess to the murders when Mohammad originally confessed, but was stopped because everyone thought he was pulling a Spartacus. Maybe he really was the murderer. I do know it wasn't Vanessa or Axel as Axel wouldn't bother to sneak around to kill people, he would just do it right in front of everyone, while Vanessa wasn't there for the second murder. I also wonder if Vanessa will find her daughter, and if her daughter will still be human.

Finally, I would hope that in a similar apocalyptic situation I wouldn't give up so much of my humanity, like pretty much every single character has so far. It's interesting how far these characters will go to survive and will it ultimately be worth it.
