I finally learned why Discovery is so different from Original Canon!

In short: The people making the show haven't got the rights to the original Shows from Star Trek, over TNG to Enterprise.

They have do make it look and feel different because of a licensing deal - but that was never openly admitted, to get all the old Trekkies and Fans onboard.

That is why it is more optical inline with the recent movies than with the old beloved shows.

At least there is a silver lining for Original Canon Shows - if the companies holding the different licenses (old canon / new prime canon) merge again.

Let's hope so in sake of the New Picard Show.

I don't want a "25% different to TNG" Picard Show ;)

CBS statement: CBS TV Studios does, in fact, have the right to use the U.S.S. Enterprise ship design from the past TV series, and are not legally required to make changes. The changes in the ship design were creative ones, made to utilize 2018’s VFX technology

Sorry for me being late on this Discussion ;)

I guess anybody who doesn't work at CBS or Universal has a hard time to get to know the whole truth.

But even though I like Discovery the video offers an explanation why the show feels strangely off not just in regards to the updated USS Enterprise Design but to so many Canon changes.
- And why the show was set before original Star Trek anyways - so they are closer to what was created and licensed for the new movies.
And so that they wouldn't have to deal with the shows they assumedly can't really use.

Season 2 tries at least to get back to the old canon in some points.

- Pike ordering the holo communications ripped out of Enterprise (but what with all the other ships over the next 100 years?)
- Spore drive violates alien living space and has to be put down
- Klingons have hair and look a little bit more like the "usual" ones.

But I'm sure, the producers of Discovery would never openly admit or allow anyone to say, that they are not 100% canon with the classic shows. That would hurt them a lot.

Oh that's easy. Young idiots who either know nothing about Star Trek or hated it because they have no class or creativity are making it. That's why they charge for the show. They knew a lot of the original fans would hate it, so they figured they'd milk the dumber viewers for all they had while the lead balloon went down in flames in less than 3 years.

There's a reason a lot of fans and former actors/writers/producers gravitated over to "The Orville." It outdoes STD in spades, despite not being a serious or an official "Star Trek" show.

I really didn't like all the changes that didn't really fit into canon - but to call the authors idiots --- no too far.

I had a good time watching Discovery - they had a few great twists and the production value is among the highest of all current TV-Shows.

I also like the Orville - but - to be honest - it is a brash copy of Star Trek up to story lines and characters.
It is not funny enough to be a parody and most of the time not serious or deep enough to be drama.
They haven't figured out, what they want to be. And for sure they need more original ideas.
It feels like Star Trek Fan-Fiction - like Seth MacFarlene wanted to be Kirk or Picard, and build a show around it.
At least an enjoyable one, but still just an inferior copy.

I agree about The Orville. I'm a fan of MacFarlane and was hoping it would be much more humorous, like his other work.

At least "The Orville" is watchable and you don't have to pay to watch it, beyond having a cable package or Hulu. It also gets better with every season.

Funny cause in S2E8 they showed a TOS clip of Pike and Spock on Talos IV with Vina and then continued one from there as they revisit that planet.

Spock never had a brother named Michael, which is the first reason and the first telling as to why Star Trek Discovery doesn't actually take place in the Prime Universe, and is more in line with JJ Abrams Star Trek.
