Any good?
The trailer looks interesting. Thumbs up or down?
shareLooks like it might be funny.
shareits alright
shareYes, very good!
Stellar acting, particularly from Olivia Colman, well-made drama that kept me engrossed throughout, looks absolutely gorgeous. Everything you want from a historical film, if you like historical films.
Thumbs up. It is an 8/10 from me. Really well acted, great costumes and a strong score help enhance the film. It goes on a little too long and doesn't always work as well as it should though. The ending feels too abrupt and isn't completely satisfying. Definitely worth seeing though.
shareI just saw it. Thanks for the reviews.
I found it enjoyable. Very different. A quality film especially the directing, sets and costumes.
I think it's Yorgos Lanthimos most commercial film to date, still weird as hell and will annoy more especially with it's ending. But with a Oscar worthy central performance from Olivia Coleman, and career best performance for me from Emma Stone (yes even better then her Oscar winning one from La La Land) and Rachel Weisz deliver's her best performance in a while, also Nicholas Hoult is great in a smaller role. It definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it's darkly comic and it's great seen Stone play such a dislikeable character, she should do it more often and Coleman is fantastic.
I plan to watch Yorgos Lanthimos' other films since I enjoyed this one.
shareThe only one that I personally enjoyed more then this of his was Dogtooth, the film that put him in the film map. I think The Lobster, his first English speaking film, is fantastic for it's first two acts, basically everything in the hotel with a show stealing Olivia Coleman is for me when the film is at it's best. Once Farrell's character escapes I didn't think the film was that great, but I probably be in the minority on that one. But Farrell is excellent, as is the supporting cast.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer is probably his bleakest work, and it's a uneasy work. Some of the acting might put people off, not that it's bad just the way Lanthimos had the actors act in a stilted lifeless way. But Barry Keoghan is excellent in it, as is Farrell again. Not a film for everyone, pretty much like a lot of Lanthimos's work. I haven't seen Alps, his follow up to Dogtooth, it seems to have slipped through the cracks on his C.V.
Pretty much the Favorite is the closet so far he's come to a Oscar/Audience friendly film. I'm surprised the Award committees have really gone with it, not cause it's a bad film just cause it feel's so unlike something that could win a Oscar.
What could win an Oscar went out the window last year w/ The Shape of Water.
shareHaving seen all his films i would definitely recommend you give Alps a viewing.
It has all his trademarks, strange universe with specific rules, dark humor and great acting.
And the premise is extremely original, from IMDB: "A group of people start a business where they impersonate the recently deceased in order to help their clients through the grieving process."
Now that is an interesting setup.
I have only seen it once, at the cinema in 2011, but i am going to revisit it at a later date.
Film of the year for me, but I loved the Lobster and KOASD. Didn't realise it was the same director till the credits though, definitely more accessible than his other work
shareIt was interesting with a major plot twist. I just saw it last night. I’m having mixed feelings about it.
