....manage to avoid a fate worse than simply getting shot?
Camilla is set up to be very ruthless (if you'll excuse the pun), hellbent on exacting revenge for her murdered son. She has her brother killed, and even threatens Claire that she'll be sliced open for withholding truth about her son from her. But when she finds out it's someone not even connected to her family and catches up with her, and is insulted in the process, it's a nice little merciful killing. I would have thought Ruth would be made to suffer first and possibly Camilla would want to know why she killed her son, before having her killed. I'm not even sure I buy Camilla coming after her on the same night to kill her herself to be honest.
How? Because it's an ultra-feminist show, that's how. No way they're going to depict a woman being graphically tortured and killed here. A man? Yes, of course, several times throughout please, including the lead character, but a delicate perfect woman? Never!
Also, she's a beloved character, arguably the best in the series. Of course it's not realistic that Ruth would have had such a quick, graceful death, but there's no way in hell the show is going to depict what really would have happened to her if the Mexican cartel got their hands on her.
And realistically, there's no way Ruth would have survived as long as she did throughout the show, just carelessly skirting the law and pissing powerful, extremely dangerous people off left and right with virtually no consequences. It's also unrealistic that someone as wealthy and powerful as she is by the end of the series wouldn't have some kind of protection around her.
But whatever, it's a show that exists in its own loopy kind of universe that sort of borders ours, so it's fine. A lot of aspects of this show don't really make sense when you examine them closely. Still a good show, but very uneven at times.
Not sure about an ultra-feminist show, it doesn't exactly show women in a great light when some of the more despicable characters in it are women. It's certainly unrealistic though and yes Ruth would certainly have been tortured in reality. Don't think that's necessarily down to gender as it is her being a beloved main character.
Not sure I buy the ultra-feminist angle. I think you're guilty of trying to over-politicize everything. Just enjoy the show. Not everything has a hidden political agenda.
Camilla knew Ruth had a justifiable reason to kill her son. She had to kill Ruth, but there wasn't anything it for her to torture Ruth. Threatening Claire was just that... a threat. She wouldn't have necessarily done anything else to Claire beyond killing her if she found out she lied.
