We don't know what happened. Who pulled the trigger and did the shot even connect? There are so many questions after that episode. I still like the show BUT I don't like having so many unanswered questions at the end.

He shot the goat cookie jar urn with Ben’s ashes in it. The goat cookie jar urn exploded and covered everyone with Ben’s ashes. The ash cloud triggered Mel’s sense memories from his coke-abusing days; and he proceeded to snort Ben’s ashes and unwittingly getting rid of the evidence.
But the showrunners felt that this snort-themed ending was, shall we say, a bit too on the… nose. So the cut it out and opted to go with the more ambiguous sound of a shotgun blast over black screen ending.
