Ok so when they showed that slave zombie/ "grandpa" chopping wood with the axe, I thought for SURE we would see that axe again at some point. Like Chris using it to defend himself or maybe him being chased with it. How do you show an axe in act 1 and then not use it in act 3?

Because Peele was too creative for that! I'm glad it didn't come back, it would have been too slasher movie-ish and would have cheapened Chris' escape.
shareIt was a cool red herring, he did a lot of things that are very much in the suspense/horror movie mold (subtle influences though, not as a parody) but then other things that broke away from it and didn't give you what you expected.
I just loved this movie so much, it had so many details that really helped build the mood. Like that old fashioned TV console in the basement with the hypnosis triggers!
So because a 19th Century Russian playwright came up with that theme it has to be a law that is obeyed across all media for time immemorial? Peele was attempting to avoid being formulaic. He borrowed heavily from past films/novels (i.e., Seconds (1966), The Stepford Wives (1975)). Does he have to pay homage to every previous artist for the past two centuries?
