I love Tulip.

I love Tulip. I love everything about her, and this is coming from someone who Haaaaaaates strong female characters in our modern sci-fi/horror television shows.

Haaaates. With a capital H.

Seriously. I rant against the "empowered female character" trope in today's television, not because I'm anti woman-power, but because these characters are often written so poorly. They are written as this idealized powerhouse of all things sexy but also they're pissed off while having this needy, sweet and sensitive inside. Like every single writer just copied and pasted their personalities and put them into another supermodel, these female characters typically lack depth.

Just off the top of my head for Sci-fi/Horror women who are supposed to be badass but are infuriatingly annoying: Sookie Stackhouse, Lost Girl, anything Angelina Jolie plays, list goes on.

Case in point:http://the-toast.net/2015/11/26/empowered-female-heroine/ Great satire that illustrates how most badass female characters are written, and why it's so obnoxious.

Tulip, however, is not this. She's a badass and isn't annoying about it. Strong, but sensitive...in a clever way. For instance, in the finale when Jesse used his power to make Tulip kiss him, you'd think she'd be into it. But that punch at the end along - not a slap by the way - with "Don't ever do that again" was perfect.

I can't put my finger on it. Tulip displays a lot of what you'd think would fall under my argument for an annoying overpowered female, but I still find her endearing and so fun to watch.

Anyone else loving her, too? I'd love to talk about what it is that's so cool about her!

reply

YES!!! I loved Tulip from the very moment she bit the ear off that guy she was fighting in her car. I loved how memorized that little girl looked when she asked her name. I understood why she was taken with Tulip.

One of my favorite parts of the season finale was when Jesse kissed her and she punched him in the nose. I burst out laughing because it was unexpected. I think thats what Jesse likes about her, she's a bad ass, but doesn't mind showing her vunerable side.

reply

She is obviously meant to be tough but adorable but fails miserably at both. She is one of the most annoying characters I've seen in a very long time. She sees to be loved by silly white kids that never actually interact with anyone darker than snow. She's supposedly black but looks like a slightly tan white girl so to moronic millennialls she is safe.

No offense to you personally.

This.

Or you can just call her what she is; biracial.

Tulip has fans of all races. Not sure how you came to your conclusion.

Tulip O’Hare looks the most distinct from her comic book counterpart, but I don’t care because Ruth Negga is always awesome. She gets more opportunities to shine here than Misfits or Agents of SHIELD. https://mattthecatania.wordpress.com/2016/08/01/amcs-preacher-is-a-compelling-creature/

I'm almost clever! https://mattthecatania.wordpress.com

I totally forgot she was in Skins. Remembered her from SHIELD though. I love Tulip too! She just exploded on screen and made quite the memorable entrance and refused to be anything less than awesome since. I didn't like how she was hanging around for Jesse and shouting at other women to leave her man alone lol but it's because I don't understand "the only man for me" kind of love so that's cool. Ruth Negga acted her heart out.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Or I could refer to her as I did, right? Why do you care? Do you fancy yourself an "activist"?

The more racists complain about how much they don't like her, the more endearing she's going to be to the vast majority.

As such, your work on the boards has really only made people like the show and its characters more and I'm sure it thanks you for the job well done.

I see you're still stalking me like some desperate oddball with a perverse crush. Now you are so pathetic you have resorted to copying my posts, adding in your own bigoted comments and attempting to attribute the quote to me. It was bad enough when you were just the typical hypocritical white moron spewing the cause of the week verbatim but now you have sunk to blatantly lying to "prove" some sad point. Your theory seems to be people that are annoyed by the character tulip are racists. Never mind that the character is written to be snarky, hateful and annoying, traits that most people despise. Nope your brilliant lib logic says the only reason people don't like obnoxious characters is racism.

At least we know how you really feel since everything you added that was not in my post is obviously your own ideology. Perhaps you should seek counseling because you have some serious issues beyond just being a hypocritical bigoted liar.

Oh noes, I'm gonna lose all kinds of sleep if it's true that some racist neanderthal on the interwebz doesn't like me... 😱

@pankoeken

Yeah, yeah, we know, you can't stand the fact the fact that the actress playing Tulip is black (like a lot of other idiots on here.) It's past time for you to get over it by now, dontcha think? Because nobody gives a damn at this point. And not every character on TV has to be white and blonde, 'cause everyone in the world damn sure isn't white and blonde (of either gender.) Get over yourself, please.

reply

@activista

You are a bitter hate filled bigot so who cares what you think? You have been posting the same tired "oh lawd white folks be the devil" sh!t for over a decade. Do you ever get tired of playing the victim? Of course you don't. That would require getting off your lazy fat ass and taking a modicum of responsibility for once.

You are definitely one of the most hateful bigoted cVnts it's been my displeasure to encounter anywhere. A *beep* that spews as much vitriol as you do is destined to meet a horrible end. Most likely from some other hood rat that wants the pocketful of change you stole from one of your many churren.

Suck it bitch.

reply

LOL wow

The douchebag is strong in this one

reply

@pantoeken

Oh go screw yourself, you ignorant racist piece of s***. I'm a black woman who likes seeing someone that looks like me onscreen for a change in a role that's not the usual stereotypical role for black actresses. Calling me a "hood rat" and other various racist stereotypes simply because I called you out on your racist BS, and you couldn't stand that, just shows that you haven't got a leg to stand on--you stupid racist trolls never do. I'm not filled with any kind of hate. It's just racist trolls like you who can't stand it when you get called on the constant racist BS you post. And, oh, BTW, the show's second season just started! So it's only racist trolls like you whining about the female lead not being a white woman. Meaning nobody gives a damn what you think about it,lol!

reply

Awww poor little angry bigot sleepytigger is tossing the race card again. It doesn't matter that I NEVER said anything about wanting the character to be white. That doesn't slow down an angry hate filled dirt stupid bigot like sleepytigger. Her fat ass grabs her well worn greasy race card and throws it as hard as she can. It's the go to move for the truly stupid and truly lazy. Gee what a surprise. Keep on perpetuating girlfriend. You changed your name but you still have the same tired "everyones be a raycis lawdy mercy" act you always had.

The actresa who plays Tulip, Ruth Negga, is black and bi-racial, and she dosen't look like a "tan white girl", she looks a black woman, period.

reply

Love her too. The scene where she goes outside to blow up the helicopter is my favorite in the series.

reply

That scene was fantastic and helped hook me into the series (so bonus points there)... but it feels like you must be forgetting the hotel fight scene intro! I love Tulip and she's in most of my favorite scenes probably... but I think the best bit in the series was Tulip-less.

reply

She's the worst character on the show, portrayed by a lousy over-actor, and there's nothing about her, other than her name, that is like her character from the source material.

reply

She is definitely not the same Tulip given to us in the comics... and thank God for that. The Tulip in the comics isn't a great character afterall. And one of the chief complaints against Ennis has always been that his female characters (and the way the males treat females in his books) tend to be pretty awful.

All of that is actually why I really enjoy this quote from Ennis:

Same as any other character-type or genre, if the sales aren't there the books wither on the vine. One thing I've discovered over the years is that a certain part of comics' predominantly male audience doesn't really like tough women. Sure, the idea's okay in principle, so long as you have an attractively drawn figure that sits mutely on the page as a nice safe object of lust – but if you then make that figure reasonably human and give her a mind of her own with even vaguely believable responses, all of a sudden things aren't quite so cozy. Make her formidable to any degree, and you're on thin ice with a lot of men – give her a bad attitude into the bargain and you go straight through it

So... I guess maybe he's a smart guy that tends not to have strong women in his books because he's just giving the fans what they want? His words certainly suggest that he just doesn't think the readers of his books could handle a strong woman...

Thanks, because we all know the only way to measure the worth of a lady is by how attractive we find her... amiright?

In this specific case?

Agreed.

@everythingangels

In that quote, Ennis isn't saying that he has a problem with depicting strong female characters---he said that it's a certain segment of the male comic audience that has a problem with seeing a strong female character depicted, period. You completely misunderstood what he was saying. And in the Preacher comics(which I have read some of) there is a good portion of the comic that show Tulip became who she became, and she turns out to be a bada*** in her own right--that part was fun to read, especially when she ends up getting some major revenge on some bad dudes. And women read comics,too,duh,---funny how that's always forgotten.

reply

What you can't put your finger on, is probably that Tulip is written with tons of nuance. She's not dogmatic. She's not just one thing. And yeah, she's a tough bada$$, but she's also not afraid to be emotional or feminine. She is whoever she wants to be at the moment and owns it. She's also very loyal, sweet and vulnerable underneath her tough exterior (for good reason, because her backstory is so sad), which makes her more endearing.

The problem with tough female characters in media isn't because they're tough, it's because the same amount of time and care is not given to the writing of them that's given to male characters. They shorthand a lot of these tough, female characters and expect you to fill in the blanks. Men get to be 3D, because screenwriters are men (another MAJOR reason why female characters often suck). If the actress plays the part as written, then it's often flat.

When you think of the tough women who are iconic in film and tv (Ripley, Dana Scully, Jessica Jones, Clarice Starling, Veronica Mars, even Xena, etc), you can see the time that was poured into crafting real people instead of a 'type'.

I'd argue the same holds true for male characters. I really hate paper thin tough guy leads and prefer my male protagonists to be more than just a hot body and a good fighter. This is why antiheroes are so much easier to like. Jesse and Cassidy are antiheroes, and they're memorable and awesome. Jason Statham's entire movie repertoire (except for Spy, which was an awesome comedy) is boring and monotonous.

Tulip is honestly amazing and I love everything about her. It's completely understandable why both Jesse and Cass would be enamored with her.

Extremely annoying character. Extremely annoying actress. Extremely stupid TV-show.

PS That was kinda extreme. However, it was also extremely sincere.

PSP I love the comic book. Extremely.

Seems to be the consensus, those who read the book and know the material see how bad the show is. Non comic fans have no clue. I'd rather they leave a property the fk alone than making a bad show about it and damaging its chances of getting a proper release.

Gotta love Rogan and talentless turds like him who say "man, I love the source material, it's so perfect.... now I'm gonna change a bunch of sht so I feel like I contributed"

Deadpool in the Wolverine movie is an example of changing sht FOR NO REASON.
Deadpool the movie is an example of what being true to the material can be (see also Fight Club).

Obama got 43% of the white vote, McCain got 5% of the black vote. Who's the racist again?

reply

Not sure I agree with Fight club. The film is pretty different to the book, and many argue that the film's better, due to the added content. This is the case with a few classic adaptations- Jaws, Stand By Me, Bladerunner, to name a few- in the hands of good writers and directors, the adaptation can exceed the source and it's daft to think all changes are for the worse. However, Preacher seems to be written and directed by juvenile stoners eager to appease AMC's censors so most added content adds nothing and the changes are either nonsensical or a wuss-out from doing something with any punch.

reply

I absolutely HATE Tulip. The whole macho woman cliche is so played out. Sick of seeing 90 lb women beating men up twice their size. The female ego is so huge nowadays ALL women on TV are "kickass" just like every commercial has the dumb man and the know-it-all woman. yawn.

At least TRY to make it believable. Nah, we'll have the 1000th scene of the 90lb woman running and jumping on a man and throwing him through the air when she uses her thighs to grab his neck

This is absurd. You do realize the vast majority of black Americans do not vote Republican?

reply

Me too. She's tough as nails but also shows a kind side.

Never read the comic, though know the Tulip in the comic was different. However, cannot imagine anyone else playing that part now.

Also, really like the chemistry between Tulip, Cassidy and Jesse.
