Anyone think that was a bit random.

Nothing random about it.

Except that it took 10 hours of the TV show to finally happen, whereas in the comic it got dealt with in about two pages.

It was a figurative scourging by the Preacher.

nah, they showed it, all the methane gas building up under the town. i dont think in real life it would blow up the whole town, but i thought it was just a convenient plot device

kind of sad some interesting characters where wiped out like that.
