From Rosemary’s Baby to the The Omen to Eraserhead to The Brood, if there’s one thing I’ve learned from horror movies it’s this: having children is a nightmare. Enter Ali Abbasi’s Shelley to join the baby-horror crowd. A slow-burning, eerie creep-fest that gives way to body horror, Shelley finds young Romanian immigrant Elena (Cosmina Stratan) accepting a job as a housekeeper for Danish couple Louise (Ellen Dorrit Petersen) and Kasper (Peter Christoffersen). The couple live deep in the woods in a beautiful but power-free house. Louise hint at a fear of electricity, and as a result there’s only lanterns to light the house at night. The living arrangements might be odd, but Elena and Louise develop a kinship.
