Danish/Swedish/Norwegian folklore? [spoilers]

I got the impression from this that the viewer is supposed to recognise some sort of legend being played out - does anyone have any idea? The mother says she can't be near electricity because it effects her, but it plays no part in the plot. she is also the only one who doesn't seem to notice, or doesn't care, that the baby is strange and the multiple lake references made me wonder if she is meant to be some sort of water nymph? The figure over in the corner of the room at the end too makes no sense out of context but might tie into something?

The film reminded me of Borgman, which seemed similarly all over the place and filled with unexplainable events until I found out about the folklore it was based on and suddenly all the weirdness was tied together into a coherent story, which is most of the reason i feel like this film has something going on outside of it.

Interesting..If ^this^ is the case(its somewhat based on folklore) I do hope that someone recognizes it, and decides to share the details of the folklore..

Another little tidbit with the water that you mentioned... Further into the pregnancy Elena became extremely pained by the mere touch of the water to her skin(as Louise was bathing her, and Elena howled in such horrific pain that she had to get out of the water completely).. so, too did the baby react to the water when Louise was bathing her in the tub.. in fact it was the only time that the baby cried, and she too seemed to be horrifically pained by the mere touch of the bath water to her skin(once again Louise had to stop the bathing altogther as she had done with Elena earlier)..

So, I'm wondering what all that was about? I mean we were pretty much led to believe that Louise, herself, was not a normal human..but she had no issue at all with water, and in fact she seemed to love, and enjoy baths with no pain whatsoever.. So, if the baby came from Louise(meaning whatever strangeness that Louise was, was passed down gentically to the baby) why were both the baby, and Elena(while pregnant and carrying the baby in her womb)..why were they both extremely pained by the mere touch of water to their skin?

One other little tidbit regarding the water was what Louise said to the baby one day while the two of them were outside by the water's edge..she tells the baby that one day when the baby grows old she will be bathing in that lake.. Huh?..WTF?.. what was the point, or meaning, of Louise saying that to the baby?

Also the chickens and the way they reacted to both the baby, and Elena while she was pregnant with the baby..what was up with that?.. up until that point the chickens had never been fazed by Elena, but once she was with child the chickens began to react very negatively toward her, even biting her at one point.. Louise seemed to understand exactly why it was, and said she hoped it didnt scare/frighten Elena the way the chickens had become aggressive toward her..Elena laughed it off, saying itd take alot more than that to scare her..

Then, if I didnt misunderstand, Elena toward the end of her pregnancy goes out to the chicken coop in the middle of the night and kills/eats the dead, raw chcicken...WTF was that about??..on a different night we dont see what Elena went out and ate, but we did see her hands and mouth covered in the blood of "something" the next morning when she awoke..what was the meaning of this?..what was Elena going out and killing and eating in the middle of the night, and what was it supposed to be indicating?

Its these exact details that left me frustrated, wanting to know what they indicative of, and am hoping that if there is indeed some folklore that we're unaware of, that someone will pop on here and explain it..

Regarding the electricity you spoke of.. Louise says she can't be around it..the only other scene that could be even slightly related is the one involving Louise, Elena, the doctor, and the ultrasound.. Elena is worried that something is just not right with the baby, and the doctor is telling her everything is perfect, everything is fine, and then suddenly the entire ECG machine shuts down.. I thought this, too may be related to whatever it is that Louise was, and that the baby was..both of them affected the electrical machine and caused it to crash..but, here again, another detail just left hanging out there with no explanation whatsoever.. UGH! Frustratingly maddening..lol

no, more japanese, watch the ring

what does Ring have to do with Shelley?

Sadako is supposed to be the daughter of some sort of sea monster in the third (?) film, but other than that it isn't really a folklore thing in it. However, as above, Shelley felt a lot like it was meant to be referring to something, like how Borgman was specifically using nattmara mythology in a modern context and didnt really make sense until you knew that.

the ring is much more superior, why watch crappy remake
