Great Movie, SPOILERS
We didn't get to see this movie when it was at the theater because it left super quickly. What a shame because it was visually beautiful. I would have loved to have seen it on the big screen. It reminded me of Terrance Malick's movies, not just the way it looks, but also the pacing. SPOILERS The scene of Juan teaching Little to swim was incredible. The movement of the waves and the color of the water were stunning. This movie broke my heart. Every frame made me feel Chiron's pain and loneliness. At the beginning, you can see that Little has a tough life situation, but his mom is a single parent who has to work nights (I think, because she doesn't go looking for him when he didn't come home because she was at work, she was wearing scrubs) so he does have some home life. Later, his mom descends into drug addiction and Little turns to a kind drug dealer for structure, love and guidance. The drug dealer is a wonderful character. He's pragmatic about his illegal activities. What a tender performance from Mehershala Ali! I can't say enough about all of the actors. These were all exceptional performances. To me, this is a perfect screenplay, beautifully written. There isn't a lot of dialog but everything you need to know is in the actors' faces and the way they move. Little is so defeated sometimes all he can do is nod. The scenes with Kevan and Chiron are amazing. The love scenes were touching. The last scene was powerful. I love this movie.
