How in hell is this show rated 8.1 on IMDB??

It has long since gone off the rails, and I watch it now only out of morbid curiosity. To me it seems like the writers have absolutely no idea where the show is going. They're just making
up shit as they go along. Eventually I will drop it.

Also: WTF were those small black things floating in the pool at "Donkey Dad's" apartment complex?

I like that the show continues to reinvent itself. Last Man on the Earth did the same thing.

That's another show which has sort of gone off the rails, but I still watch it out of morbid curiosity.

It's fine that you have stopped liking the show. You've made your point on like every recent post on here. Others still like it. You could listen to the podcast and get an insight into exactly what the writers are thinking. Or you could just stop watching the show.

Or I could keep watching it out of morbid curiosity, and then discuss it here, on an open and free forum for discussion!
Novel idea, eh?

WARNING: It's going to be the latter, Buttercup.

Are you discussing or just complaining about how you don't like it? What don't you like about the show? It seems you started disliking it in season 2. I don't really give a shirt if you watch it or not. I made a comment that you might want to listen to a podcast to hear where they get the ideas and jokes, as I thought that it might be something that would be good for your morbid curiosity. Did I say that you couldn't discuss something? No, I certainly did not. You just are always looking for a fight so I am out of this conversation.

I'm discussing the fact that it has gone downhill, and that I'm only watching it out of morbid curiosity. What part of
that do you not understand? Unlike you, I'm interested in what everyone thinks, and I didn't know we were in a fight.
I thought we were just disagreeing. That's not a fight imho.

But if you want to bow out, that's fine. Anytime you want to re-enter the conversation feel free to do so.

Have a good day.

Most votes come from the time period when it was still fresh and innovative. (season 1 & 2)

Good point, thanks. I bet they wouldn't rate it that high now.

I watched the first several episodes, which consisted of people running around frantically and silly things happening. It just wasn't my thing, although I suppose it is somebody's thing. I found it irritating, and frustrating because it wasn't going anywhere, so I quit watching.

In retrospect, a wise idea.

Actually the first season went somewhere that was very interesting. All of those episodes that "didn't go anywhere" helped the season go to where it went. As the show was depicted as a regular sitcom these things might have been missed until the end. Then in retrospect it all works out.
The second season, while not as good because you had figured out what kind of show it was by then, was still very good.

I left during the 3rd season. The first two seasons focused on the concept of the show and showed it though these characters. I think at that point is concentrated more on the characters and worked the show around them instead of the other way around.

It's lost it. It was good for a season or two, bit it's crap now.

reply

I agree, but it's still rated 8.1 on IMDb.

reply

Yep. I've cut it loose. Too boring and repetitive.

😎

reply

it has the rating it has because other people like the show more than you. So they gave it a good rating.

reply

Duh. Thank you, Captain Obvious. BTW, I have now cut it loose. It's gotten so boring that even morbid curiosity is not a good enough reason to watch this crap anymore.

I don't think the show ran out ideas, per se. I think they knew from the start where they were going with the show. It was more that they wanted to have each season to be slightly different to the last. A lot of sitcoms, even long running ones, tend to be no different in terms of plot by the end then from when they started.

Cheers, for example, was just about people hanging around at a bar for eleven seasons. Shelley Long left, Nicholas Colasanto died, and there were a few new characters who joined part way through. But other than that, nothing much about the show really changed. None of the characters even really changed. As good as Cheers was, it was basically eleven seasons of the same characters doing the same sort of thing, with no real plot or character evolution.

In The Good Place, Season 1 was the season where Eleanor was trying to fit in with what she thought was The Good Place. Season 2 was about Michael's slow transition from villain to friend. Season 3 was the back on Earth season. Season 4 was more about the character's redeeming themselves and getting into the real Good Place, and ending the story in a satisfying way. That's not to say everybody will like every season equally, but I don't think it's fair to say the series ran out of ideas. I think they knew the story they were telling from the start.

An interesting analysis, thanks.

I love this show, but I do agree that the quality goes down.

I think seasons one and two are night-unbeatable in terms of inventiveness, plot, character, and comedy. Of course, it helps that each episode deep-dives into philosophical concepts; that makes this show as much of an intellectual joy as a visceral one.

Season three saw a bump down in terms of quality, but I liked that they were still actually pushing the show somewhere. Also, while I prefer the premises of seasons one and two, three still delivers gold in a lot of places. "Jeremy Bearimy" gives us Chidi's meltdown, for instance, and Donkey Doug is awesome. The whole episode "Janets" is incredible, too, and not only gives us more inventive good stuff, it also shows off D'Arcy Carden's formidable acting capabilities as she mimics the others' acting styles.

Season four is a bit of a slog in parts. I do find it hops down, quality-wise, and it's a pretty disappointing drop-off. The new characters, John and Brent, aren't very well-written - too stereotypical - and Simone isn't handled well, either. With that said, subpar Good Place is still a watchable show, and it does serve up some excellent moments (Chris' reveal kills me every time and "Tinker, Tailor, Demon, Spy" is a great bottle episode, partly because it focuses us back onto the main characters). The finale is also really great and ties a satisfying ribbon over the whole thing.

I admire The Good Place for sharp writing, big ideas, and the fact that they had the stones to always be taking it some place. TGP's writing staff could have spun 6+ seasons out of the premise of any of the four seasons, but instead of flogging it until it was dry, they moved with precision through their storyline. That alone nets them my respect, but it's a great show because I find it continuously entertaining.

Oh, and the things floating in the pool look like beer cans to me.

I always like it when somebody finds an old post. Sometimes it takes a minute to remember what the heck I was trying to say, but it's really fun nonetheless.
