What's wrong with Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Just curious, in one of the last episodes Michael asked Jianyu /Jason if he was a fan of RHCP and considered it a "sin". So, is it considered lame to listen to them? I'm just curious, cause I've always liked their music and they're a very respected band where I come from.

reply

Lol. I like them too. It must be an "LA thing." Maybe the writers are part of the "in crowd" and we are definitely out.

reply

Awesome, I'm part of the "in" crowd, because I hate them also. And I'm not even from LA!

reply

They also take a stab at the RHCP in an episode of Parks and Rec. Maybe it's just an inside joke.

reply

Well, consider the source. There seem to be two types of "sins" in the show. One type is the real thing. The other type is a red herring that Michael is just using to troll Eleanor and the others. I'm pretty sure Michael's aversion to the Red Hot Chili Peppers is the latter.

Pretty much. Most people have always considered fans of the band to be rather pretentious. Their music isn't very good but fans like them because they are edgy. Fight the system, bro!

I thought the stereotype was that RHCP are for aging douchebags who wear backwards baseball caps and sing along to the obnoxious yet silly lyrics. Plus their music now sounds like it should be sold at Walgreens.

It was a joke. Its a comedy. But really they were talking about FANS of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Not the band itself.

Its like talking about people who drive BMW's or Volvos. (or a PRIUS!) They are quite nice cars there is nothign wrong with them.

reply

It's the same thing that's wrong with lukewarm Manhattan Clam Chowder and warm beer. They just have an axe to grind.

reply

I don't like/dislike RHCP much one way or the other (they have some good songs, but I wouldn't feel the need to see them live myself), but I still laughed at this joke.

I do, however, think it might have been even funnier if they changed the band to U2, especially after their whole iTunes album debacle showing up and not deleting from people's phones a couple years ago.

Since it is actually the Bad Place, he's just screwing with him.

It's sort of the same thing as a personalized licence plate, or any of those other minor sins: it's not THAT big of a deal, but truly virtuous people (the small percentile that actually make it into the real Good Place) wouldn't enjoy them.
