Literally made my jaw drop

Even if it was semi obvious, it was done so well. I was legit floored. What a twist.

Is the show getting renewed?

reply

Agreed, I thought it was brilliant! I haven't heard about a renewal but I really hope so. A second season would be perfect but I don't know how far they could go beyond that....mind you, I originally didn't think it would work much beyond one season before that twist, so I'd love to see them try.

reply

I think it could really work. They could keep building on what happened before in subtle ways. You'd know that Michael was doing X because Y had happened last time or the time before. Or Micheal could make inside jokes with the audience because the characters don't remember what happened before.

Going back and watching the older episodes it does seem obvious now but before I saw the last episode I just chalked all that stuff up to this being a silly light hearted show about the afterlife.
I never really thought much about any of the things that made the good place look less than ideal because it just seemed like the show wasn't really trying to be taken too seriously.

Which made the twist even more impressive. I never thought they were going to be that clever and I loved that they tricked me.
I really hope they get a second season now.
Although I'm going to miss good Michael, even if he does put on the act again now we'll know it's an act and it won't be the same.
But maybe this twist was also part of an act and this whole thing is really just the entrance test for the real good place. I don't think that's it but now I'm not sure what to think.

It's almost like Stepford Wives, without the wives.

reply

Have to be honest, it wasn't obvious to me either and you're right, that's why the twist was so good! My only point of disagreement would be with good Michael vs bad Michael. Danson's portrayal of good Michael as awkwardly goofy was interesting and well done, but he seemed to come alive after the reveal. It's going to be fun watching him pull off both if he gets the chance.

I think they played with the idea, that if HELL is really a tortious fire and brimstone, then a place where everybody has issued with a small group of people seems like "the good place". Its a shift of expectations. "This isn't so bad, even they are allowed to make people feel bad".

If you really think about it, the good place must have like people flying around, having orgies all the time, while eating and watching all episodes of Lost in VR.

You can almost hear Michael asking, "Do you think kicking the dog into the sun was too much? Did I almost give the whole thing away??"

reply

I was not expecting that twist!

reply

i was not either and after bingeing the whole show I almost feel like rewatching it to see what is really going on in the back ground. haha

reply

I loved the twist. Really wasn't expecting it. I kinda feel like rewatching it too. There must be some hints in there that would be fun to spot.

reply

Yeah, kind of like the before and after from
the truman show
. Not sure if we need spoilers in a thread named this, but hey.. haha. Yeah, I'm sure there is some quite obvious stuff too. Never thought it would be a show that I would want to watch, let alone rewatch. haha

reply

Yes this! I just purchased Season 1 on i-Tunes & watched a few times back to back. There are one or two looks and slight chuckles that Michael gives after he sets new scenarios in motion, that are now a dead give away- but there was no way I noticed it during my first viewing.

reply

I was caught completely by surprise as well.

Unfortunately it did. Meh.
