That Ted Danson/Michael heel turn though....

Truly great moment. LOVED the evil smile and laugh. Although I will say that he is justifiably a legend, because as great as that was, he made me love good-if-inept Michael and I am sad that he will be no more. I will miss him.

But I want season 2 NOW.

reply

I'm on the opposite end. I thought it was awful and hope there isn't a second season. Was truly engaged in their outcome, and now? Unnecessary plot twist.

reply

Couldn't disagree more- I really hope we get a S2!

-Who is it?
-It's Grandpa. And it sounds like he's gotten into the horseradish again.

reply

You really have a bad taste. I hope you don't own a television. It would be a waste of your money. Maybe playing video games would suit you better?

Chillax, Fake Eleanor. Other people get to like things that you don't.

Lol @ people who insult other people for having an opposite opinion about a TV show.

Chillax, man.

reply

He got no entertainment but misery from watching television. Better spend time and money otherwise.

reply

For the love of God, are you 5?

reply

I agree with you. I came on here expecting this twist to get flamed hard and everyone love it. I don't understand it. Like you I was invested in what they were doing. A story of redemption and hopefully salvation where characters could grow and better themselves. This just seemed like a completely unnecessary twist.

reply

But the season ended with Eleanor more or less redeemed. I knew there would be a twist because Eleanor was in a pretty good place and you can't continue a show without some type of conflict. The ending did surprise me but I don't think we're going to get a repeat of S1, if that's your concern. I actually think Eleanor will figure it out much faster in S2.

And yeah people can like different shows. You do you but I like this show.

reply

I think that some of her morality probably stayed around, so we will have a different Eleanor in season 2

reply

If they want to keep this going for some seasons, the biggest twist is not those four being tortured. In my opinion, the biggest twist will be, that Michael (strangely named after a fallen angel :) redeems them all.

Second season will be surely different, but they can't wipe their minds every season. The next season must switch the whole story to another level, I'm guessing they wander off to other neighborhoods, becoming rebels, living under fake identities, whatever.

They have to keep it fresh, as "My Name Is Earl" did.

reply

I love the twist ending.
But yeah, to each their own. I can see why some viewers may get mad because Michael's earlier decision to retire seems meaningless now.
I rarely watch TV these days and The Good Place and Elementary are the only things I watch. So yeah, I sure hope they get a second season.
A lot of people were saying how this could be the bad place but Chidi being there didn't make me see the whole picture. There were def. clues and it was a really good twist. That being said, Ted Danson really makes this show shine.

reply

I liked how they led up to Chidi's not being such a good person the best. They did a lot of Show that he was indecisive and better at talking about ethics than acting on them, and that he could be passive-aggressive. But they didn't come out and start talking about how that affected the people around him until the last few episodes. So, it wasn't obvious that he was as annoying to his friends and family as the others were until really late in the game.

IKR?
I thought Chidi's flashback scenes were lame and didn't add much. A really good twist is when a fact that was right in front of you which you thought was insignificant turns out to be something really significant. It was really well done.

reply

It was--partly because they took such a long time establishing the true moral parameters in the show. Initially, it seemed they were sending up this shallow view of Good by putting vapid rich people in Heaven and having it be a satirical view of the afterlife. It wasn't until really late in the game that they revealed that nope, these people (the ones who were real and not demons playing a role) were actually in Hell. Then it all fell into place. At that point, we knew enough about Chidi to realize why he was there, too. Nicely done, show.

You nailed it, thesnowleopard.
The twist is really well-written. We thought the joke was that "Tahani raised so much money that she got into heaven by a point-based system despite being a tad condescending". The audience accepted this explanation even though it was not fed to us. It's only later that we realize that things didn't add up and our initial impression was correct.

reply

But yeah, to each their own. I can see why some viewers may get mad because Michael's earlier decision to retire seems meaningless now.

It wasn't meaningless, it was part of Michael's psychological torture. He knew they'd be upset.

reply

"Seems meaningless" to the audience. As I said, "to each their own". Two people can interpret the same events differently, depending on their upbringing, culture, past events, etc.
Some people might see it as a great twist (which I do) while other people feel conned given that they invested in the character of Michael and his supposed story of loving humans.

reply

If it weren't for the brilliant acting of Danson it would've been unbearable, like the LOST ending. They kept you guessing pretty much til the end...they sold the melodrama of the last three episodes well.

reply

Oh, my gosh, yes! That moment when Michael revealed himself is fantastic. The slow pan in, the twisted smile and the evil laugh. I've watched that same moment about ten times now, just marveling at how well he plays that. That is first-rate acting.

Same. And as others have said, it wouldn't have worked nearly as well if he wasn't utterly believable as the avuncular, bumbling architect. Yeah he needs at least an Emmy nomination for this season.

reply

I loved it too. I almost cheered when Michael started chuckling. It's only happened to me with another series's twist this year: in The Exorcist, when they revealed Angela was actually Regan.

reply

Even before that, I died laughing at him wearing Janet's outfit when he gave Tahani and Chidi the frozen yogurt. 

reply

I have not had a chance to see/experience any Game of Thrones shocking moments on my own without having it spoiled somewhere. But I imagine they feel a lot like how Michael's heel turn made me feel.

"The plastic tips at the end of shoelaces are called aglets. Their true purpose is sinister."

reply

Yeah, that was great.
