Turns out they were not in a real Good Place, but an experimental Bad Place that made people miserable without torturing them. The targets were Tahani, Chidi, Eleanora, and Jason, but Jason was too stupid to realize he should be miserable. Michael was lying all along about how the place functioned. Janet was innocent; she was programmed to think it really was the Good Place.
Michael's superior gave the 4 subjects and Janet amnesia in order to reboot the experiment. But Eleanora left a secret message to herself, and the cliffhanger was her finding the message .
