This has got to be the worst portrayal of police work in, I don't know, Japanese cinema?
Maybe I'm used to US cops tropes, but the detectives depicted in this movie looked as if they were purposefully doing the stupidest thing they could think of when handling the case of a dangerous criminal.
It was a bit infuriating to watch, and that made me enjoy the movie a bit less.

i was thinking that either that ending was terrible or the detectives are the stupidiest i have ever seen.
shareSo basically it's realistic. It's amusing how many Americans think all cops are superhuman John McClane-like heroes. If only they knew how lazy, sloppy and careless most detectives in the US are in reality.
sharePolice work in cop films is generally pretty poor. For example, Dirty Harry (1971), Inspector Callahan's police work was pretty bad. He berates police officers for letting Scorpio slip there a police net and escape, then later in the film he gets distracted watching some naked chicks in an apartment and allows Scorpio to reach the roof unseen. This causes the death of an undercover police officer. Later in the film, Harry tortures Scorpio to discover the whereabouts of the suffocating girl. For some reason, he strolls into the DA's office the following morning completely unaware that using torturing and not having a warrant will cause all evidence to be thrown out and for Scorpio to go free. The consequence of this is that an entire school bus of children is threatened.
