Movie Shown At My Church

First of all...let me say that I was raised in a Christian environment and I still attend church on an on-again, off-again basis. Then let me also say that I am a liberal democrat, which is rare to find amongst Christians.

That said...there were parts of this movie that did touch me and were really sweet. But then there were other parts that were heavy handed and it felt like I was getting hit in the head with a sledgehammer repeatedly.

I can say that as a liberal, I believe people should be free to worship in any way they choose. I also feel they should be free to speak about their beliefs...no matter where they are. In this aspect I agree with the movie...I didn't see that the teacher in the movie did anything wrong and I felt that they were really stretching it to make it look like everyone (non Christian) would feel she was preaching. They really stretched this part and beat it into the ground.

I also see that in some instances Christians are beginning to feel persecuted for their beliefs. I do have to wonder if this is really happening however because Christians still hold a great deal of power in this country...and most are aligned with the conservative right.

I can also say I don't believe for one instant that the government is going to start demanding that the clergy of the United States hand in there sermons for approval. But what I do so is that Christians fear this is going to happen and they fear it deeply.

EDIT: I have since done a little research on the topic of local government's demanding that the clergy hand over their sermons. This DID happen in Houston and I will say that the city of Houston seemed to overstep their boundaries. But my original point still stands. This movie is feeding the fears of Christianity, that is, everyone is out to get them and I honestly do not feel this is the case.

I guess I'm rambling. But for the most part I felt this movie fed into all of those Christian fears. And Christians do feel they are being persecuted. I don't necessarily believe this is happening...I feel they are simply being kept in check.

I could have looked for other posts about this here I'm sure there are plenty. But I didn't feel like going through all the arguments.

My Kingdom for a good Christian movie that isn't so heavy handed.

Many of them simply don't understand that to have true freedom OF religion, everyone must also have equal freedom FROM religion. Because if the state establishes any religion or part of a religion, they have to then impose that religion thus compromising all other religions and those of no religion.
