What exactly IS diana? Please some1 help

I'm a little confused. I thought she was a demon. I know she died during the doctor's experiment but I think she came back as a demon. BUT the whole Sophie being attached to Diana has to play in there somehow. What are your thoughts?

Diana was a real human girl at one point but after her death she somehow became attached as an entity to Sophie through depression. That's my take. It is kind of weird logic but creative as well.

^ pretty much

She was a "ghost". An evil one that attached itself to Sophie and is strengthened when Sophie is depressed.

I think she was different than a ghost since she could physically touch and hurt people.

I like your interpretation. I was also thinking she became a demon after death somehow

The fact that there is no convincing answer to this question indicates how bad the movie is.

Astral projection of the mum's deeply held psychotic beliefs? Basically, the mother is evil and should have killed herself off or sought a divorce rather than murder her husband for the crime of working late and researching her childhood hospitalization...

There was something about her in life, as they noted (personally I think they gave too much backstory) but she couldn't stand sunlight and had psychic powers reportedly (though really no evidence of that, weird and unhealthy friendships at an asylum strike me as easy to develop) the death of her father is the only evidence in that direction, and given that he spawned her. Who knows what was wrong with him?

There is no Diana it's just the mum who has gone crazy. Diana is a metaphor. The film works well on an allegorical level. The mum murdered her husband and then starts to attack her kids as she is mentally ill.

My take is that Diana in the present (not in flashbacks) was a physical manifestation of the mother's mind. Diana was a real person who was sent to a psychiatric hospital because of violent reactions to light. The doctors tried therapy exposing her to high levels of light, but it killed her. There is a real syndrome called xeroderma pigmentosum which causes physical intolerance to light, and the implication I got was that she had this. During her treatment, she befriended the mother, who was in for depression. After the real, human Diana died, the mother kept her alive in her mind. The manifestation was stronger when the mother is depressed, which is why Diana tried to prevent her from taking her meds.

Doesnt work, since the ghost was clearly seen by the other characters. She was the ghost of Diana, simple as that...WHAT kind of creature she was can be discussed though.. Perhaps she was a evil demon already in life?
