Isn't the fact that the basement where Diana was held is in Sophie's house a pretty clear indication that they were family related, probably sisters? And that would explain the close connection of Diana to Sophie.

My take is, diana has always been living in sophie's basement after she died. But I'm not sure about family-related since there's no mention of it.
shareMaybe you're right... Maybe she's just a personalization of Sophie's depression. I thought they were perhaps sisters because of the writings on the wall referencing father and taking Sofie away from her, and the fact that that happened in Sophie's house and not some mental hospital where they presumably met.
