Writing on the walls in the basement?

So, was that Diana or Sophie that wrote all those messages in the basement? And why would either character do that? Isn't Diana dead? And if it was Diana, why would she have written down in the basement? I don't get what that scene was hinting at. Why would she need to write that stuff - she was dead or living in the basement? Or was it Rebecca's dad? That scene threw me off.

It was Diana. Remember when Rebecca has her flashback to her childhood almost-encounter with Diana, she took Rebecca's sketchbook and drew herself into the family picture she had been drawing. And when she attacked Rebecca in her apartment she had scored her name into the floor with a stick figure drawing of herself.

They mentioned that Diana was found as a child in the basement of her home, in the dark, and her parents had killed themselves because they felt she was evil. As Diana was latched onto Sophie, she was effectively 'living' in the house, so she maybe had a sort of affinity for the basement, or was drawn to it as she'd been kept there when she was alive or something. Diana was a very troubled and dark individual, even when she was alive; the writing and scratches were probably just like her ghost venting her madness.

I agree with what the first responder said, but I think the reason she did what she did in the basement, was because when Sophie was taking her meds and the father was home, the basement was the only place she could stay most of the day, since the rest of the house was probably lit up with sunlight and light bulbs. So she felt like it was the fathers faults she was stuck in the basement because they wanted Sophie healthy which meant Diana wouldn't be able to come around. (In addition to what she went through with her own father when she was alive.)
