For you sharp eyed detail people.

Ok, I've seen this twice. Once while in NZ the day after it's premiere. When it came to Canada we went to see it again. First movie I've ever seen twice in a theater. I also sent my neighbours after my second time. They loved it. One daughter swears that when Ricky shows the picture of his Mother that he carries it is actually a picture of the whacked out Social Services woman Paula. I certainly missed that. Anyone else see that? Thought it would already have been asked here but didn't see it. What say ye?

That was my impression of the scene as well. But I'm willing to bet it was not the case and just (at least) my mind expecting how the story would play out.

The only thing I noticed about the photograph was that it looked a bit like a class photo or one taken from a yearbook. Whoever it was looked like a teenager, maybe around seventeen.

Whale Rider was also a Kiwi flick. There's not so many NZ Maori actresses out there so... it makes sense she would pop up in another Kiwi flick!

Missed that one. But it was a neat flick.

I think it was a pretty generic picture of a teenaged girl. Could it have been Paula? I guess... But it could have been someone else too. And I don't recall a single other clue. So I would say no.

And I think Paula would be too old. If his mom was a young teen as in the pic- let's even say 17- and he is now 13... then his mom would only be 30 or 32 at the very oldest. Is Paula that young? Maybe I am not great at estimating ages, but I would say no.

I agree with above poster that it was probably a generic Maori woman.
They do appear to have similar physique but so does a lot of other Maori/Pasifika women.
(I live in NZ so I should know)
