Not nearly as bad as the reviews make it seem

I know I'm in the minority here, but I genuinely enjoyed what I saw. I think the mutants were cast about as good as they could've been and they were all compelling in their own way. My main gripe is they didn't spend more time on getting to know the mutants better.

It's not the best superhero film, but it's certainly not the worst. Definitely not the worst just among the X-men franchise either. I honestly think it's a shame it won't be trilogy like it was initially intended.

reply

Only good thing about the movie is Anya Taylor-Joy, everything else is a mess.

reply

To each their own. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

reply

It was good enough

reply

If it hadn't been for her, this would have flopped for me. She gave it legs.

Even the folklore of the bears... I've always known it as the two wolves. who knows, but it was ok for a hot afternoon not wanting to do anything else.

reply

I enjoyed it. Very creative for an X-Men movie, and interesting set of characters. Overall I'd rank it average for an X-Men movie. It was miles ahead of Dark Phoenix, which was a worthless remake of X-Men 3.

Shame we'll never get a sequel, the ending left it wide open where they'd go next. :-(

reply

That's what I'm saying. I would've been really interested to see more of these characters.

reply

The Last Stand and Dark Phoenix are based on two different story arcs. I’m a comic readers. Dark Phoenix was based on the Hellfire Club arc while X3 was based on the Gifted storyline with elements of the Dark Phoenix arc.

You mind as well say that Deadpool is a remake of X-Men Origins: Wolverine since they both cover Wade’s origin story.

reply

At the very least it has to be better than Dark Phoenix. That movie was awful.

reply

I haven't see Dark Phoenix, but even the trailers didn't really make the movie look good to me and based on everything I've heard about it, it sounds like nobody likes that movie. I feel like The New Mutants will at least achieve cult status.

It's a real shame it was pushed back as to not conflict with the Dark Phoenix release.

reply

Possible. I think this might age better than some other movies. Just a shame you only got a hint of the characters and universe. There could have been more comedic moments too. And more action.

That movie was a different genre. So you can’t compare them. No offense, but do you judge movies by merits/faults or your personal preferences?

reply

"Do you judge movies by ... your own personal preferences?"

Agreed, my husband and I really enjoyed it. Tonally, it was a little all over the place, but that often happens with reshoots. They should have just embraced the full-on horror aspect and ran with it. The casting was quite good, I thought, and I too would have really enjoyed seeing more from these mutants.

reply

Oh noo, that was my fear mid way. It was coming across as a horror, jump scare movie. And the interaction between them gave it a "Who's gonna die first" feel. glad it turned out a bit better than I was fearing.

Now, give me a movie based on Anya Taylor-Joy's character.. ;) yeah that's just the bloke in me wishfully thinking.

reply

I thought it was alright. Definitely better than Dark Phoenix and most of the last ten or so X-Men movies except for the Deadpool movies and Logan.

reply

That's what I'm saying. It's not nearly as bad as the worst the franchise has to offer. It's not the best by any means, but there's still enjoyment to be had.

reply

Why are you comparing this to other movies of different genres?

reply

Because they are in the same series and many of those movies sucked.

reply

So what criteria do you use to judge them?

reply

Whether or not they have a good story, good action, good characters, etc.

reply

So by arbitrary standard?

reply

By normal standards.

reply

There is no general standard to judge a film, as Ebert Roger had been saying for years. You judge based on what they were trying to be and whether or not they are successful in their endeavors.

reply

Which is what I do so what is your argument?

reply

You said that you judge movies if they have a “good story, good action, good characters etc”. Do you think those standards to films like “Scary Movie”?

reply

For everything except the action part, yes. Considering it's not a superhero movie, it'd be weird to expect action sequences.

reply

Yeah, should have left out the action part. But have you seen scary movie?

reply

A long tome ago. Why?

reply

No, you don’t judge by the artist’s intent. That’s what called the Intentional Fallacy, and is forbidden in all formal art criticism. The only thing that matters is the RESULT. Period.

I realize no one here knows formal criticism, but I had to speak up.

reply

Sorry it took me two years to reply. This is what Roger Ebert (aka the most famous film critic of all time) said:

"If a director is clearly trying to make a particular kind of movie, and his audiences are looking for a particular kind of movie, part of my job is judging how close he came to achieving his purpose."

In other words: You judge a horror movie based on how scary it is or an action movie based on how exciting the action scenes are, etc. This is what I am talking about.

Criticism is literally defined as the analysis of the merits and faults of a work, after all.

reply

If they suck or not, really.

reply

Vague.

reply

You name surely isn't.

and a bit scary, tbh.

"Last ten or so X-Men movies?" Let's see: X-Men 1, X2 X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine; X-Men First Class; The Wolverine; X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Deadpool; X-Men: Apocalypse; Logan; Deadpool 2; X-Men: Dark Phoenix; The New Mutants.
You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but I don't share it.
IMHO, X-Men 1, X2, X-Men First Class, The Wolverine, X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, Logan and Deadpool 2 were all good, and in some cases, great films. X-Men: The Last Stand, while not a stellar film, had its moments. X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a mess because the film makers tried to please everyone and failed. X-Men: Dark Phoenix could have been a lot better. Killing off Mystique was wrong. Now the continuity changed.
I have not seen The New Mutants yet, so I cannot comment on that one.
I do not expect everyone to agree with me, as personal preference varies greatly from one person to another, but this is the way I feel about the X-Men films, my personal favorites being X2 and Days Of Future Past.

reply

The movie was adverstised as a horror movie and it failed at that.

reply

I take every PG-13 "horror" movie with a grain of salt. Besides, horror is subjective.

reply

I think he means that it didn’t have much horror in it.

reply

I was horrified, but I don't think that is what they were going for.

reply

Dani wasn’t cast well. And Roberto should have been smaller, but altogether not bad. Overall, I thought this was a decent flick. Much better than anticipated. It wasn’t as bad as F4. It needed to be fantastic, though. I wish it had more of a story and more in the way of a plot. So sick of these movies just skirting around concepts and characters because they can’t fully commit to them in case they’re used for a later movie. Just give us Sinister already. And the movie would have been better if it was larger in scale. This was practically a stage play as far as characters and settings go.
