And the other guys broke!

yep, i was thinking 'oh this gonna be good'. Both smithies talked big and seemed to really work hard and the pig carcass was gonna get owned..

And then wow two spectacular fails !

The opening rounds were great too, especially that poor guy having nothing but problems is left with a little stubby knife...

And the pro coal fire guy losing that massive chunk on the nail test, but it still cut well !

This is probably the best episode ever for me :)

I felt sorry for both those competitors. When I was watching the show and saw the sword quench I knew it wasn't hot enough.

Most of us are blade smiths though and not sword smiths. We simply do not have the right equipment to heat treat the swords right. I know two competitors this year on the show that had to build special equipment just in case they had to make a sword. They wouldn't give my any details other than the elimination round had to be stopped and to let the studio air out after someone farted so bad they had to stop filming.

Oh my god, are you serious about the fart? If it's true that's freaking hilarious !

Don't look at me

Wouldn't a trough made of refractory brick with a long pipe running along the bottom do the trick? Line the trough with refractory clay, drill holes along the length of the pipe, cap it on one end and affix your bellows venting to the other. Fill it with coal and water the outer edges to keep the fire from getting out of control? That method would let you get about any length of heating you wanted, wouldn't it? Wouldn't break the bank either, I don't imagine, and you could dig the trough out in your yard if you had to.

I think anyone that's never used coal (seems like most of the contestants) wouldn't want to start experimenting.

I'm assuming they would just beg or borrow a sword forge from someone.

But from my absolutely no knowledge at all prospective sounds good. 👍

reply

unfortunately they don't sell sword forges. I do know some people that are making them now because of this show. Their just wasn't a large enough market to warrant before.

reply

Maybe it would work. You don't need a long forge to forge it. You can only forge about 8 to 12 inches a heat anyway. It the heat treating part that's the problem. I use salt pots. I can heat treat anything up to 4 foot in length. They do make plans for making a sword furnace out of used metal drum. I believe Don Fogg sales it.

If that's the sort of thing you find amusing, "America's Funniest Home Videos" is probably more your style. I hate to see somebody put their heart and soul into something only to suffer catastrophic failure that will end up being viewed on TV. The only time I find humiliation amusing is when the person being humiliated is a big-mouthed ego on feet who loves putting other people down and is finally getting his comeuppance.
