Is Dr.Choi Korean?

Im confused because they call him CHOI but the Korean pronunciation would be CHAE if his name in Korean is 최 . Has it been said what his ethnicity is, maybe i missed it.

He's actually Japanese, born in Okinawa. They haven't addressed his ethnicity on the show.

The actor is Japanese, yes. I'm referring to the character.

Back in season one there was an old lady who had a very stereotypical view on anybody who wasn't white. She liked Dr. Choi and later Dr. Halstead asked him, "Aren't you Korean?" or something to that effect. Dr. Choi himself didn't confirm whether or not he was though. There's a Korean subsitute teacher at my highschool who also has the surname "Choi" but she didn't pronounce it as "Chae".

I think its one of those things that gets perpetuated? Like 김 (KIM ) as a last name (actually more like Gim in actual Hangul pronunciation). But in English, they say Kim, because they figure thats what English people sre used to. The name in Korean cant be CHOI, its Chae. Its a diphthong. The two letters are 오 ( O ) and 이 (I) but together they make the "ae" sound.

Im always curious why tey do that, but it makes sense if the actor isnt Korean. He probably would have corrected their pronunciation mistake.

Probably, but I doubt it. Like I said before, the teacher at my highschool didn't correct anyone on the pronounciation of her name. Neither did the two Korean people I know whose last names was "Kim". Same with the Polish teacher at my highschool, his name is "Dubrowski" but pronounced "Dubrovski", but he's fine with people pronouncing it the way it is spelled.
