With so few threads here, nobody's watched. Will likely be canceled.

Seriously, in comparison to other shows and given the complexity of the show, there should be pages of threads. The fact that there aren't can only mean that almost nobody has watched the pilot - despite it having been shown several times already.

What is that analysis based on? It's a low-budget Australian TV show.

The entire first season of Wolf Creek only has about three pages of comments.

Due to the lack of moderators, trolls can ruin the IMDB message boards. Don't feed them.

reply

Obviously, it's based on a lay analysis. To anyone with even half a brain, that much is clear. So please accept my condolences on your anencephaly.

reply

Your condolences are unnecessary and worthless, as is your lay analysis / pointless negativity.

"People on the IMDB forum aren't discussing the first episode, so it will be cancelled".

Bravo.

reply

"Bravo" accepted. You may call it sarcasm, but all sarcasm is based in truth, so with it, you ultimately betray the knowledge you otherwise refuse to admit, something that has since proven true with viewership ratings now in.

So now that we're all on the same page, we shall not expect Sundance to air a second season of Cleverman.

Seeing as it was renewed a couple weeks ago I suspect you are wrong.
iMDB is largely used by Americans. Hugely successful non-US shows get very little traffic until it is released in America - at which point the volume of discourse goes way up and the quality both in ideas and ability to express them goes way down.

And while it is also on the Sundance Channel in rather edited form not many US households get that channel and many that do don't realize they do.

I'm enjoying it so far. I hope after it runs on Sundance it will get an airing on affiliated AMC, it gets a lot more publicity, and a lot more people are familiar with the channel and their genre shows.

reply

Already renewed for second series.

It was renewed by Screen NSW only for ABC Australia, not cable television's Sundance channel in America. Since I posted this topic, the numbers have come in, and lo and behold, my original lay analysis was exactly right. I couldn't have been more right. Viewership for the airing of Cleverman on Sundance this past week was abysmal, below abysmal actually. Nearly no one watched it. Sundance could have gotten more viewers with an infomercial, literally.

So if television stations in New South Wales, Australia want to foot the bill for whatever aboriginal-culture, affirmative-action reason to have a second six episodes made to show to the few handfuls of watchers there, they can have at it. No one else in the world is signing up for a second go. In fact, it'll be a shocker if the first go isn't scratched from Sundance's broadcast schedule before it's out. Maybe they'll replace it with that ad for the toilet bowl nightlight that changes colors. I love that one!

EXCLUSIVE: The day after its U.S. premiere and ahead of tonight's Australia bow Cleverman has been renewed for Season 2. SundanceTV and Oz's ABC TV said today that production on the genre drama's next six hourlong episodes will begin later this year in Sydney.

"The world that Ryan Griffen and the rest of the team behind Cleverman have created is a perfect blend of timeless mythology seen through the prism of a near future lens", said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV. "This is a series that sophisticated genre fans will no doubt fall in love with."

I'll take Joel Stillerman's opinion over your lay analysis.

reply

Geez what a shock, Americans aren't watching a show not based in the USA. I'm amazed it was even bought by an overseas network.

The show was renewed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, not Screen NSW they just co-funded it. So it'll be shown Australia-wide + on the Australia Channel cable channels overseas.

reply

The ratings in Australia have crashed with the second ep, down by a third-this show was heavily promoted and the 1st ep still only had so so ratings-that the renewal of it came before any real audience feedback says much about why it received a second season from the govt funded ABC.

reply

This was never going to be a ratings hit. I have no idea what people were expecting? 300,000 viewers is pretty decent considering it's the ABC.

Namenamerson:

Us Americans watch shows that aren't made in the U.S. all the time---pretty much half of everything on PBS, which is made in Britain,so what's your point?

reply

To this American who wouldn't mind seeing a show like this, it's hardly been promoted much over here, which is probably the only reason it hasn't got high viewership numbers in the U.S.

whatever aboriginal-culture, affirmative-action reason to have a second six episodes

What the heck is that supposed to mean? Why the heck does anything that has to do with people of color in general have to be an "affirmative action" thing? Aboriginal people are the original Australians, so why the hell shouldn't there be programs about them? As an American, I've seen very few TV shows specifically about them myself. That's why this show interests me (I came across a trailer for it online recently, which is how I found out about it.) The concept of this show itself sounds intriguing, even though it's been done before. It just hasn't been done from an Aboriginal perspective before, and that alone makes it interesting.

reply

I watched the entire first season of the show, and liked it-----plus it was cool to see an Australian show where most of the cast were Aboriginals---that alone made it interesting enough to watch----as well the fact that the show was written, produced and directed by Aboriginal folks. Since that first season was left on a definite cliffhanger, I was definitely looking forward to it. So when the hell is that second season coming out? I ain't heard jack about it, or seen a new trailer for it or anything.

reply

I just found out about it today. I have Uverse 450 but never get around to watching the Sundance channel. I think there would be more here if it was on SyFy instead.

reply

I was just about to comment saying relatively the same thing. It really doesn't feel like a Sundance channel show (despite having the obvious non-mainstream) roots, coupled with the fact that I don't believe it's been advertised very well, and the slot time they've chosen for new episodes (Wednesday 10 EDT) is kind of a dead spot as well.

I have enjoyed the premiere though, there are more questions than answers but I think that mainly stems from my lack of familiarity with Aboriginal mythology being an American and all, though it did lead me to attempt some research on my own about it.

reply

There is no 'Aboriginal mythology' as such-there were many different tribal and ethnic groups in the country at the time of white settlement, in the same way that there's no single native North American mythos.

"What is an Oprah?"-Teal'c.

reply

Please do not lecture me on semantics.

As I'm sure, you understood what I meant. And I would use the same phrase to describe Native American mythology here in North America, while still being able to recognize that there are varying orgin stories and the like amongst different tribes.

As I said, I know nothing, period, about Aborginal mythology as a whole because I love state side, so this series encouraged me to look into it, as a whole.

reply

It will go at least three seasons if other Australian ABC shows are anything to go by. They are tax payer funded and don't really worry about ratings and international sales very much, and seeing how this is a left wing show it is practically guaranteed to last for years.

reply

tax payer funded ? and its still good too . crazy , didn't know that . i am awaiting s2 though .. i want to see what crazy new power the lead gets next .
