I wish there was a flashback scene...
Maybe some scenes before the war? Like when Mary was caring for her husband and stuff.

shareDoes it appear to you that the story line is sympathetic to the Confederate characters? The Union soldiers are depicted as the 'bad' guys,
shareI think it seems that way because the only wounded soldiers that we get a longer story for are Confederates some way associated with the other main characters... Dr. Foster's brother, Tom, etc. We really haven't gotten a strong look at any yet. My favorite so far was the young man who died holding the flag.
shareThat would be really interesting since this series was developed using Mary Phinney's diaries. I had no idea that she, Emma and Frank Stringfellow were all historical figures. Awesome sauce!
shareYes, but they seem to be only loosely based. (For instance, the real Phinney was in her mid-40s during the CW, but here the actress just turned 31.) I think this is good, considering how irritating it can be when more accurate portrayals of characters are randomly derailed for the sake of plot. (Mr. Selfridge, anyone?) Here they have cut the claims of exact truth of characterization early (although they seem to be very savvy on the setting side!) which allows flexibility, but at least they do have reference material to go by to flesh out those characters.
...I hope that makes sense.
I completely agree. A lot of the well produced pieces that vary from the historical reference still work. I think it's because they do a good job fleshing out the personality of whatever person a character is based on. I know a lot of people are annoyed by shows that take liberty to do that, for example Mr. Selfridge. To me, they get his personality perfect. I like the attention to the period detail/history and the story lines for many of the characters that reflect the time well. That seems to be something Masterpiece takes to heart, and it works in both shows.
