What this show does not need

The violence/blood/gore are necessary because frankly, war is violent and bloody. What this show doesn't need is gratuitous rape scenes and cursing. Those felt added in for shock value and appeasing the modern audience. This so far show just doesn't feel up to PBS standards. I'm a bit disappointed.

reply

I agree with you.

reply

What cursing?

reply

I'm sorry but those things happened. Stop trying to sugar coat it

reply

I never said they didn't happen.

reply

Can you define PBS standards? Oh, that awful cursing! What world do you live in?

reply

PBS standards:

Shows better than Mercy Street.

reply

OP What bubble do you live in?

My best friend just died in front of me OOOOOOOHHHHHHHH FUDGE

reply

No bubble residing here, but I don't like gratuitous anything. Mercy Street tries too hard to appease modern audiences. Great PBS shows like Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife, Sherlock, Doc Martin, etc., while all British shows, don't try hard. Nothing feels catered to with those shows.

reply

Those are all great shows. But if they're going to show something that happened in real life during those times, they need to show it. It's not about modern times, except people want more reality put into the shows. I understand it was gratuitous to you(I don't need anything to go overboard), but it's nothing compared to what gets shown on cable. What they showed on Mercy Street was nothing in comparison.

reply

Of course subject matter in MS isn't anywhere near what the show on premium cable channels. Boardwalk
Empire and The Sopranos are two of my favorite shows, but nothing on those shows felt forced or pandering to modern audiences.

reply

Victoriavixen please go away. People like you ruin the internet. You don't like gratuitous anything? Well though luck that the world doesn't conform to you then. Bye!

reply

SHiR8, please. This is a board for discussion, and I can discuss whatever I feel like discussing in regards to this show. Don't like what I've posted? Hide/ignore me, then. Don't respond to my posts if you don't like what I've said. This board doesn't "conform" to you, either.

reply

Just letting you know that you are an entitled c4nt who nobody likes...

reply

I expressed my opinion on a message board, you moron. You know nothing about me. Get lost, a$$hole. You're a joke.

reply

Your argument might carry a little more weight if Anna hadn't been raped on Downton Abbey and there weren't swearing on both Sherlock and Call the Midwife. I also recall episodes of Call the Midwife that dealt with incest and child brides

Freedom of religion means ALL religions not just your own.

reply

I tuned in for the first time moments before the rape scene. I immediately turned it off.

reply

Because rape and cursing didn't happen during the Civil War? This show gets criticism for being too tame as it is and you'd have them whitewash things even more?

reply

You have to remember this is an American show, on an American channel and I suspect the OP might be American (a guess). So it's okay to show violence and gore, hell, you can even allow people to shoot kids for real with guns bought at a local store, as long as their rights are protected.
But show anything sexual (good or bad) and that's a big no. You can't have that. Generally speaking of course.

reply

I agree. Just a few minutes into the second episode and I've had enough. Yes, we all know slaves were raped, but we don't need to see it.

reply

I guess because some people don't like the fact of slaves being raped to really resident with them, because seeing it live onscreen really bring it home as to how bad blacks really had it during slavery!
