Strong Start but...

A friend posted in my movie group the other day on facebook, and I HAD to check out this new Netflix original. "The Get Down" is either a series or mini-series using what I believe are fictional characters in the Bronx at hip hop's earliest stages.

I saw the name "Justice Smith", and thought maybe that was Will Smith's son from his first marriage? He really does look like him in the face, but no relation from what I've researched. Shameik Moore really has the breakout role in this. You may remember him from last year's "Dope". Oh, and I just looked into it, duh, that was actually Jaden Smith (Will Smith's actual son) in one of the more supporting parts. LOL Adding a little extra touch of class to the series, you have seasoned veterans Giancarlo Esposito and Jimmy Smits in a couple of nice roles.

But it's the music that is really the star of this show. The first couple episodes blew me away, but we'll see how it goes from here. I've seen it so often where a show starts off really powerful, then doesn't have anywhere to go from there- just ends up floating off into soap opera land (case in point, the recent HBO series, "Vinyl").

I think you'll enjoy where they go with it if you were blown away by the first couple of episodes.

Don't worry.

Justice looks much more like Will Smith than his own son Jaden!
