The good and bad points of The Get Down

The Good Points:

1. They really captured the mood of the era. I grew up in that era and the birth of hip hop was a beautiful thing.

2. Jimmy Smits - The guy is a force of nature and when he does these features in these shows he knocks it out of the park. Just think about Prado in Dexter or Nero in Sons of Anarchy and now this.

The Bad Points

1. The acting wasn't that great outside of Smits but these are some newcomers and they did a decent job especially the actress playing Mylene.

2. Giancarlo Esposito - A great Actor but the Director didn't use him. In the later scenes he barely said anything. I would have liked to have seen more between him and Smits. I'm sure we will in part 2 because it's obvious Mylene is Smits daughter. After one unbelievable scene, he basically has a change of heart and says very little.

3. The Gangster aspect wasn't that good and it felt a little cliche. Also, the street gang was pretty lame as well.

Overall a strong C.

I thought the entire cast did a great job acting-wise

Jimmy Smits definitely stood out more than most others on the show but the other actors, especially the young ones, held their own.

The actor who played Zeke's uncle Leon was great too even though he had a small role

The Gangster violence on the show ranged from cheesy (the shootout at the niteclub) to heartbreaking (Shao being forced to murder a man). I agree that the Fat Annie/Cadillac arc of the story could've been handled a little better but it didn't ruin the show for me...
