Disappointed but it's not bad

I went in reluctantly because I didn't like the trailer, but a huge Nas fan. As a 90s hip hop fan with respect for the OGs, I wanted this to be good. Started off slow and hard to like Ezekiel and Mylene. I feel the two stars fall into the trap of overacting. The emotions on their faces are over the top and just annoying. It felt forced. There are perhaps 2 strong episodes, but the rest were mediocre. It's not horrible by any means, but the ratings surprise me. Standouts for me were the supporting cast. Jackie, the dancing disco dude, Jimmy smits, dude from spike Lee movies, mylenes friends, and shaolin in particular held the show together. The music was above average and the story was good, but the main actors ruined a good story. It plays more like a Broadway show/musical than a true TV show which I think would have brought more realness. The ending also felt rushed. I didn't care for Zeke or mylene at the end. There was no connection. I wasn't rooting for him at all. How could you? He was a lil beotch. Crying, then mad, then stealing, then lying, then dissing his boys, now I gotta be on his side? I love the premise of this, but felt lead acting ruined it. PS. I feel like they threw in the Jaden gay scene just to do it. I am really surprised the ratings were so high on Netflix.

I agree. I'm a huge Nas fan also, and I grew up in the 70's and 80's when hip hop was just starting out (breakin', MCing, graffiti, etc), so I am familiar with most of the scene.

It isn't bad, but it isn't as good as people say it is. I felt it suffered from poor editing, poor direction, and below average acting. (The kids in it aren't bad actors, I just think they weren't directed properly.) In the hands of someone else, it could have been spectacular. Baz Luhrmann is just a turd, that makes *beep* movies, and somehow, people eat them up.

I give it a 7/8 out of 10.

Para tiempo means nada nunca.
