Voguing and drag performance s01e06

This was not something that started out as a popular white club-thing in SoHo... Drag balls and voguing started out in Harlem and other poor parts of New York among PoC queers... The the Madonna song came and made it popular among white people.

The scene were Dizzee goes to the party with Thor is beautiful as all the "fairys" are dancing and being all artsy.. Very Andy Warholesque.

Just wanted to point out that there is some whitewashing going on related to this.. The drag ball culture and voguing was definitely not a white thing happening on Manhattan.

Check out the documentary "Paris Is Burning" if you want to know more.

Nope. It was a black and Latino thing in Upper Manhattan(Harlem). Of course there were a few down white "children" there.

Absolutely, and we were also doing it in downtown Manhattan, in the Greenwich Village Piers and on Christopher Street.

Those were some great times!! 

Yes, I was referring to the ball scene.

I don't remember all of the attendees at the party but I do know that by all accounts the white gays were very segregated against black and Latino gays.

Actually, by the late 60's/early 70's all gays were seemingly united, regardless of color. Gay bars and clubs were more diverse than any typical neighborhood pub, which unfortunately stands true to this day.

I used to party at Better Days, The Garage, The Loft, Tracks and they were mostly black and Latino. Very few whites frequented those clubs.

I used to party at those clubs too and I don't remember them being segregated but there were mainly black and latinos in the clubs, one of the reasons being that the music was underground and not mainstream popular - just yet.

probably don't use the term "warholesque". Andy used trans women as his muses but dropped them (including Candy Darling) on their asses without a word because "people aren't interested in [transphobic slur] in their movies anymore"

Sorry, but what means "PoC"?

reply

People of color.
