The creator of "The Get Down" was probably inspired by the documentary "NY77: The Coolest Year In Hell". It's awesome....watch it via YouTube.

Here's some more info on how New York nearly went bankrupt in 1977, and other things going on that same year, which is when THE GET DOWN is set in.
