Baz Lurhamns direction ruined it ?

What could have been a raw honest perspective on a fascinating era of American Culture, turns into a tonally confused mess of a cartoon, and in my opinon it's Baz Lurhmans direction which is over stylised, over produce and far to choppy it really doesn't do the hard grit of that era any justice. I mean I get Romeo + Julliet and I somewhat get Moulin Rouge, but Australia, The Great Gatsby and especially this which it's shot like a made for T.V Disney movie, contrasts starkly wth the profanity and crime ridden setting of 70's NYC that it's trying to portray.

The film just feels like a confused cocktail , with 2 part Everybody Hates Chris, 1 part Style Wars, and 1 part Eighty Blocks From Tiffany's. It's extremely bizarre and kind of jarring, and it's a shame because I'm fascinated with 70's-80's NYC street culture, but this show is a mess, I wish it could have been approached in a more sincere, gritty less pretentious way rather than an exercise in " hey look on how many prop's and records from the 70's we can get in one scene" am I on my own in this.

The show may be many things, but a cartoon it isn't.
