Decent but not magical

Just saw this, it was an o.k movie - could have been alot more greater.

Good things - it had great visuals, great cast, decent storyline - Mulan was hot.

Bad things - it was enjoyable but there was no emotional connection, i didn't feel empathy for Mulan, her dad or her sister or pretty much anyone, felt a by numbers movie, action scenes were nothing spectacular, Music was lacklustre.

I'd give it 5.5/10

In a nutshell, what has become Hollywood lately and Disney in particular: shitty story, shitty characters, great visuals, great CGI.

If this a proper asian production movie then this could have been great - when i watch american movies i rarely ever feel any emotion to them, there are exceptions but overall even a cheap korean movie brings more emotion and baggage to the movie even if the storyline might not be the best.

So if this was a proper eastern production movie, this could have been maybe a less gimmicky spectacle with the cgi but more grounded and heartfelt movie.

Red cliff and Hero are similar to this but just have the heart and you feel the emotion with the people and scenes are spectacular.

cgi was not that great

Watched it yesterday. What a huge let-down. It plays out like a bad female power fantasy rather than the uplifting lesson of equality from the original. All of the heart from the original has been removed.

In the format established by OP:

Good things - Beautiful to look at, Donny Yen doing anything, the evil witch, the pre-fight campfire talk

Bad things - Pretty much everything else. Horrible directing, emotionally vacant, bad acting, complete absence of logic in the details (and I'm OK with the wire-fu)

I give it a 3/10
I give the 98 cartoon 9/10

My wife and I could tell it was going to be thoroughly bad within the first 10 minutes.
