Oldman's overdue Oscar

He's been robbed multiple times in the past. But hopefully this role gets him the Oscar. He always delivers, even if its in a sub-par film.

It's all politics. Some actors just aren't big favourites of the academy, hence why Hanks and Penn get an Oscar (or nod) every time they fall out of bed, and Bacon and Cusack haven't as much as sniffed a nod despite decades of terrific performances. Oldman is somewhere in the middle: he finally got his apology nod for Tinker Tailor after fans, fellow actors and critics (particularly Peter Travers and Mark Kermode) lobbied for years, and Darkest Hour might be baity enough for a second nod, but I'm not sure we'll ever see them turn the statue over to our favourite non-PC, celebrity status-avoiding Englishman.

I could not have said it better myself, mass.

Nomination process is legit but the winners are usually carefully selected, Moonlights Oscar win and Hidden figures nomination had certain racial factors behind them.

It's depressing to see he's only had one Oscar nomination for best actor before and none for suppoting actor, but his role as Winston Churchill has won him a Golden Globe nomination!

He was fantastic in this film and deserves to win. I do think he will win.

I agree that he was fantastic, and deserves to win. However with Hollyweird, you never know what those pinheads are going to do.

When do you think he was robbed? He just doesn't do a lot of "Oscar" type roles.

I watch hundreds of full length feature films per year, so I oftentimes don't read movie reviews or watch trailers prior to watching a movie. So prior to watching this film, I must admit I didn't even know what the film was about, nor did I know who starred in it. So when Churchill entered the scene, while I knew right away that whoever portrayed him was a very good actor, I could not identify who it was. Boy was I in for a surprise. As the film progressed, I kept telling myself, why isn't this phenomenal actor in other Hollywood movies? Towards the end, I finally realized that this actor's subtle and nuanced microexpressions were at times similar to Gary Oldman's. That was the only thing that remotely gave it away. Oldman completely disappears into this role. Talk about a chameleon actor! Very well deserved Best Actor Oscar win.

You started watching Darkest Hour without knowing who was playing Churchill? I call bs on that. I’m glad Gary O won the Oscar though my (to the left of me) liberal friends think it’s an outrage.

About freaking time this man got his!

Huzzah!

He's been in far far more movies that were complete and utter crap than he's been in Oscar worthy movies.

Robert De Niro has also now been in far more movies that were complete and utter crap than he's been in Oscar worthy movies, but at least Mr De Niro was smart enough to get his Oscar worthy performances in first before he sold out to the highest paying producer who would pay him just for turning up.
