At some point, those seed pods were going to open. It was inevitable. Once that happened, homo sapiens were finished, even if they had 'the cure'. They had no way of mass producing it and no way to distribute it and no way to inoculate future generations. Humanity as we know it was done for. So she decided to move things along and start the evolution of the new dominant species on Earth, the human/fungus hybrids.
