Michael Weston as Houdini Has Already Ruined It!!!...

Hate that tiny, little guy! And his irritating voice! He's right up there with Charlie Day in people who need to fall off the planet. Along with Kevin James, Jonah Hill, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Hathaway, Conan O'brian, George Lopez, Stephen Colbert, Kanye and the Kardashians. Weston ruins every episode of any show he has ever guest starred on. Just terrible! I can't believe they cast him, and now because of him, I can't watch something that looked to be very interesting. Life and times of the Great Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and it's flat out ruined before it has even begun. Damn! 

His voice annoys me too. I can't stand him as Houdini. Also, if this is supposed to take place at the turn of the century, why does he speak like a modern day American? Although Doyle isn't exactly historically accurate either, Houdini's characterisation is just too wrong to be tolerable.

The rest of the cast and the show is okay. But I totally agree, i HATE Weston as Houdini!

Houdini came from working class America. He isn't going to sound posh. I saw a snippet and his voice reminded me of Tony Curtis' vocal in his movie about Houdini.

There are few recordings of Houdini's voice. In all that I have heard he is shouting to be heard by a crowd, but the accent is pretty much the same as what you hear from Mr. Weston. He never had an upperclass sound. He was in showbiz. Houdini was a short man, although very athletic and strong with a mop of curly hair. In the show for some reason his hair is not given Houdini's signature style of being parted in the middle with a tuft on either side.

There are problems with the show, especially historical problems, but Weston's portrayal of Houdini is as good as can be expected given the way the rest of the show is. You want to see a bad Houdini look no farther than Adrien Brody http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3132738/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_13 in a purportedly historical miniseries. Not only was he as physically wrong for the part as could be, but also much of the story was just plain made up. Excusable in Houdini & Doyle which is a fictional series, but not in a biography. Don't even get me started on Tony Curtis http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045886/?ref_=nm_flmg_prd_12

Harvey Keitel was pretty good http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119095/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_62

Did Americans sound different at the turn of the century, or is it just our words and phrases that have changed? I haven't noticed him using any particularly modern words. Americans these days might sound the same, but they definitely use way more slang than in the show. But if it is modernized a bit I just consider it translation.

Yes! That pathetic, quntie voice! He's horrible. He must give great "casting couch" to get work.

He's dreadful, but just looked. His father is John Rubinstein, who could be borderline dreadful in his own right, but often seemed to play off that, such as being the annoying French horn player who was killed in The Car, for starters.

But I loved the story Kathy Bates told about when she appeared on The Love Boat with Rubenstein and how he had to walk her thru how to behave on the set, as she was so green.

But back to Weston, yea, total miscast as Houdini. Obviously used his name to get on the show, even tho the last time I saw Rubenstein was on Frasier.

I'll forever remember him as the guy who kidnapped David and forced him to smoke crack in the back of a van.

Ive always liked him? Im surprised so many people here don't. I didn't know he had a famous father though.

And Artur Rubinstein, the great pianist, as a grandfather.

I always liked him too, and glad he finally got a major role. I always associate him with being fairly sedate in his roles, so it's kind of fun to see him highly entertaining in H&D. He looks like he does do a lot to be energetic though.
