There are rumors going around that Disney is going to officially make Elsa a lesbian.

Which isn't happening, sad to say. Sure, people of all ages saw "Frozen", but it's little girls who are buying all the "Frozen" merchandise... or rather, the parents of little girls. There aren't many people on this planet who will buy their grade-school age darling a lesbian costume for Halloween!

The closest they'll come to that is to give Elsa a "best friend" rather than a boyfriend, so that Anna won't be leaving her all alone if she marries Kristoff.

Di$ney is one of the most powerful conglomerates in the world and very pro gay so have no doubts that they want to do this. The only question is how much money they are willing to sacrifice in order to include an overt lesbian themed agenda in this popular franchise for children. The film would be outright banned in a number of countries, including China most likely and would take a significant box office hit elsewhere from a number from apprehensive parents who decide to keep their children at home.

Knowing that they definitely want to do this I wouldn't exactly be shocked but I would still be surprised if they were so determined to push this agenda that they would be willing undercut their own potential profits in one of their biggest franchises to do so. It's going to happen eventually but for now they're likely to settle for "ambiguous" & "open to interpretation".

When it becomes a question of doing the right thing or making a profit, a corporation the size of Disney ALWAYS chooses the profit motive. That's how they got to be a giant megacorporation!

Elsa isn't going to be openly gay, not in a film whose primary audience is little girls. Although it's possible that she'll settle down with a female "best friend" rather than a boyfriend, and the adults will know what that means and the little girls won't.

Well "what's right" in this case is very much a subject of controversy with drastically varying views around the world. It's not that Di$ney feels obligated to do some universal "right thing" as much a desire to do what is already in their socio-political interest.

In any case it seems we agree on the probability of ambiguously "coded" winks at lesbianism rather than anything overt just yet.

Certainly no overt winks but they seem keen on keeping her notably single with no hint of romantic interests for the time being so the relatively small number of people politically invested in her potential lesbianism can project their "head canon" onto the character without anything to explicitly contradict it, psychologically satisfying them & simultaneously avoids putting off most everyone else. This also leaves the door open for them to possibly pull a Dumbledore via 'Word of God' down the line.

I don’t think Disney will come out straight lesbian for Elsa. I can see them giving her a female best friend and leave it like that. Adults would probably understand what’s going on but kids might not nor would they care either.

And what's so bad about being lesbian? Why should parents not let their daughters see it? Hetero romance is ok for little girls, and lesbian is not?

Agreed, children would greatly benefit psychologically by seeing in these movies a reflection of the reality where all kinds of people exist in. I'm sure lots of filmmakers and studios are aware of that. What is the art if not a mirror of the world we live in at a particular time.

On that note, I saw Diamonds are Forever as a kid and thought the 2 main henchmen were funny in a slapstick way. “Look mom 2 grown men holding hands ha ha ha...!”

It was only later when I was older that I realized what the film was depicting.

And... hm, thinking about Bambi and Thumper now.... and how they whupped 007’s derriere.

In my own view and experience, children today are not the same as 40 years ago, such reactions are becoming rarer, at least in more developed countries. I believe most children before reaching age of 5 sense love between people no matter what sexual orientation, understandably we are genetically influenced since birth by carrying lots of ancestral trauma, very often related to sexuality, that doesn't mean that children need to be sheltered. For those kids who don't get it, there are also parents who can have a great opportunity to talk to them about such or other various diversities existing in nature. It would not only be very appropriate for children movies to have characters of different orientations, but also realistic. I'm sure most homosexual children could relate to heterosexual love in children films, theres been a few scenes in some children films where they kissed an animal, I'm sure they could relate or understand too.
