Is the Cast too large?

There are 9 regular castmembers in the show. Two parents and 7 children. In the beginning, all 9 characters appeared in each episode. But lately it seems there are too many castmembers for the show. It seems every episode one of the parents (either mom or dad) is "out of town" with two or three of the children. It just seems a little unrealistic.

You could also include the mother and daughter next door and make that 11 instead of just 9. Only to leave them out of an episode they don't need to write the absence in, just don't have them in the ep.

I'd've gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids.

True, but the neighbors are recurring. I'm talking about the noteable absence of the regular family members with excuses every episode that they're out of town. Is the family rich? Can they afford to go out of town every week?

reply

I don't think the cast is too large but you don't need all three younger children being little hellraisers. Either give them different personalities or just have one of the younger siblings on the show.

reply

True--maybe Lewie could have been aged up a bit and less of a "hellraiser."

I don't really mind when other cast members are absent. They could just be part of a "different plot" that we don't see.

reply

Having them not appear is way better then cluttering the show with useless sub-plots that serve no purpose other than making sure every character is in every episode.

I wish more Disney and Nick shows would let some characters go out of town once in a while.

The size of the cast for this show works fine as is.

I think the size of the cast is perfect.

Yes, I've also noticed the sudden absence of one or other parent and two or three of the kids. Seems like most of the last half dozen episodes, but everyone seems to end up back home by show's end ( except for the "Harley's Comet" episode).

Maybe the writers ran out of material. I noticed Season One ended with episode 16.

Yeah, I know filankey is not a word, but it's gonna catch on.

You mean, by the next episode? No, they don't show up at the end. They're either out of town, at camp or away for the whole episode. Then show up in the next episode, when the other parent is gone with some of the other kids.

The only mainstays are Harley, Ethan and Rachel.

I think it's fine that everyone is not featured in every episode granted they don't always have to give the so and so is out of town excuse like they have in some of the episodes but they can just not feature them and we can just assume they are at work or doing something else. This isn't the only sitcom to have a large cast past shows like The Brady Bunch and Step by Step have had large family casts and Modern Family has a pretty big cast now and they usually featured the entire cast in every episode even if some of them only had one scene in the episode.

I think the cast is too large for the showing they are actually doing.

It may be big for Disney Channel's usual roster, but this morning I remembered that most of the show's target audience might not be familiar with a late-1970's comedy/drama called "Eight is Enough."
