I hate to be that person rooting for a show to fail, while continuing to watch it (I usually hate that person!), but here's the deal:

I love Nicolas Bechtel, and I sooo want him to succeed in life. I also think Jenna Ortega is a great little actress. I am watching the show about 80% to support Nicolas, 10% to support Jenna, and 10% because my niece watches it, and I try to watch a few of the shows she watches so she can talk to me about them. I am actually the one who told her to start watching the show, though, back before it ever premiered. I have no idea if she would have watched it otherwise, or kept watching it, if I hadn't told her to.

But this show is painful. I am very rarely entertained. I find the situations to be stressful, which I never find enjoyable. I want someone to murder the littlest girl, who I really think is just pure evil. If the eldest girl somehow exited in the process, I wouldn't cry about it, but at least she has some decent moments. I realize I am not the target demographic, so my opinion doesn't actually matter, I was just hoping not to have to keep suffering through it for another season!

I might feel like my watching of it was actually doing something to support Nicolas if he were more of a main character, but he's really not. He also doesn't get to show off his acting chops, because he's basically just playing a little boy, and all that comes with that. Unrealistic though he may have been, his character on General Hospital is/was precocious, well-spoken, and wise beyond his years. So you could see from a young age that the only thing holding this child actor back was his speech impediment, because he was capable of so much dialogue and emotion from a young age. Now he's just playing a role that pretty much any little boy could play. So I don't know that this show will do much for his career overall.

Two years ago. You can see a bit of his more serious side in a couple of them:

Last year. This was actually more typical of his character's overall personality throughout the show:

I'm pleased that his speech has noticeably improved over the years. There are a bunch more examples of his acting abilities available; I just pulled a few. Type "spencer cassadine" into YouTube if you want to see more. He's just an awesome little actor, and I think he could go far. I hope he does. I just don't think SiTM is the vehicle that will get him there.

I think you're way too invested in a child actor that it's creepy.

Anyway, I'm glad Stuck in the Middle is sticking around!! :)

reply

I'm sorry that you feel that way. I can assure you I am not in any way inappropriately interested in children. 

reply

don't explain yourself, you know why you're watching and that's all that matters. i have child actors who i want to see more than the adults because they truly are talented!! mason cook is my favorite and i've always been older than him, i'm 21 he's just turning 15. he has skills, like major skills. i'm kinda like you are with nicolas, thankfully mason hasn't touched disney, the most disney he's touched is when they played spy kids 4; other than that he stays his butt in dramas, movies, or comedies on different networks. he's worth way more than a disney show, reminds me of dakota fanning

Thank you! When I saw which thread I had a response to, I was nervous it would be another jerk like the last guy. 

I stopped watching this show. I just couldn't do it anymore, even for Nicolas, but especially since I really don't think it's doing anything for his career.

Luckily, he's been back on General Hospital a bit lately, and he actually had THE best scene I've ever seen him in. It was amazing!

If it doesn't cue up automatically, start at 4:07:

Gah! That breaks my heart every time I see it.  Awesome job, kiddo. 

it's only as creepy as YOUR mind makes it. i have child actors who i adore and i'm 21, I've been following mason cook's career since spy kids 4 came out, i only watched if there be thorns for HIM. there's nothing wrong with admiring a child actor's skill especially when it shines through the show, nothing wrong with wanting to see what they're going to do next career wise. i followed dakota fanning for years even though we're only a year apart so i was young too. only tuned into gmw for rowan though i'm not a fan anymore. only watched ender's game for asa butterfield who I've been following since boy in the striped pajamas. they're in the industry too and they're job is to entertain those watching whether adults or kids, some kids really slay their roles though so there's no problem in giving them props and showing support. it's not like we're crushing on them, we can just see their skill and want to see more of it. don't be a prude, don't be so judgemental

You are awesome, crazyforyou. That was so well said!

Of Rowan or GMW? I don't like her anymore either, but I still like the show. And I think Sabrina Carpenter is amazing. I hope she ends up being the breakout star. Rowan is nuts.

I'm a general hospital fan. I totally understand what you mean. It's the only reason I watch this silly show, is because of Nicolas!

This show isn't really going to do much for him. He needs to be on a Network show or in movies. I can see that Jenna is the only one really benefiting from the show. I hope his parents are paying attention. Disney shows don't do that well when it comes to ratings. He should be trying out for Network shows and features.

reply

Thanks, twin. Yeah, I gave up. Once my own point really sunk in for me, that SiTM wasn't likely to do much for his career, I didn't see the point in continuing to suffer through it. I do like Jenna Ortega too, and I hope she does well, but I can't stick around just for her! I actually felt a weight lifted when I deleted the show from my DVR! I agree with you - I hope his parents are paying attention. He could do so much better than this show.

Much to my surprise, There-Can-Be-Only-One, I discovered that Nicolas Bechtel played Auggie's monster under the bed in the first-season Girl Meets World Halloween episode (the best of the three story lines in that episode). I did notice his speech impediment. It certainly has cleared up.

Stuck In the Middle is an odd show, compared to the others. Part of that being it is a single-camera show, "filmed" without a studio audience. We're so used to three-camera, live-audience productions with overly lighted sets that the single-camera technique is a bit jarring. It's like comparing, say, Good Luck Charlie the series with the Good Luck Charlie It's Christmas movie. The tone was much more keyed up in the series. Ironically, the single-camera production makes Stuck In the Middle feel much quieter and low-key, given the chaos of a family with seven children. And this, for me, makes Lewie and Beast at their wildest look more like real boys, not generic TV sitcom boys (even though they are). The prime example (for me) was when they played Miami Vice-type cops in that episode where Rachel is about to take her driving test.

While I like the style, I agree with critics that Stuck In The Middle came up short. The stories were fun but uneven in the first season. Harley narrated a tad too much about life as the middle child. Rachel was too self-centered and obsessed with her appearance. (I doubt that most teenage girls are so focused on fashion, hair and makeup. At least that's how I perceived them when I was in high school. But that was before the invention of the wheel so my perspective might be out of date.) Daphne was kind of scary sometimes with all of her bad and dead dolls. (They looked like prop models for an old Alice Cooper concert tour.) Tom and Suzy ought to keep an eye on Daphne's demeanor as she gets older. But maybe Daphne will grow out of it — or go full-on Goth when she's 13.

I am surprised that Ronni Hawk's IMDb "filmography" goes back only to 2014. But her bio is skimpy on information so maybe she's had more acting experience on stage. Or she was only recently "discovered" in an audition.

I look forward to season two. I hope they'll have worked out the kinks of season one. Some shows that start shaky turn out excellent. The Dick Van Dyke Show (I'm showing my age) was cancelled after one season, but after a campaign to uncancel it the show ran five seasons, won a pile of Emmys and is considered one of the very best sitcoms in U.S. television history. I read in The New York Times that the pilot for The Big Bang Theory was rejected twice and now the show is in its ninth or 10th season at the top of the ratings. Which is not to compare any show on a children's channel with shows on the "grown-up" networks, but just to say that some shows unexpectedly catch on.

Yeah, I know filankey is not a word, but it's gonna catch on.

WE GOT MOVIE SIIIIIGN!

that's great! I actually just came on here to ask if it was cancelled or not. But if it's renewed, why the hell is it taking so long? New episodes of all the OTHER shows with a "next season" get a new episode pretty FAST! No less than one month.

reply

I wonder that too. I haven't heard anything about filming, I know Ronni Hawk (Rachel) mentioned something about being in L.A. with the cast last month but that might have been to film those Christmas promos but IDK. I think since 3 of the shows are wrapping up, they wanted to get that out of the way first.
