Patterson, what the heck? (minor spoilers)

Minor spoilers for ep 2, which I just watched.

No. No way... There is no way MY tax dollars should be paying the salary of an FBI agent who's just gonna SHRUG when she catches an associate speaking Arabic over a phone and then straight-up lying about it. There's no way that can just pass.

Patterson, what the heck?

reply

I know many people who speak Arabic and I just shrug. Because it's just a language people speak, not anything to pee your pants over.

It was the lying about having just been caught speaking it, was more the issue.

reply

So if I lie about anything, I should,be turned into my boss? Sounds a little too authoritarian to me. He'd done nothing wrong, she overheard him speaking to someone in another language. It's really not a big deal, especially after she found out he was ordering dinner for her. People need to calm down over Arabic speakers. There are plenty in Michigan and they aren't scary.

Yes, if your lying is related to the nature of your job, your duties, your job performance, etc... that is a work-related matter.

If you work for the FBI in a special anti-terrorist unit, with access to a lot of sensitive, personal information about the agents in that unit ... then YES, your boss ought to be told about an incident where you spoke Arabic into a phone and then lied to deny it.

It's really not a big deal, especially after she found out he was ordering dinner for her.

Maybe it didn't occur to you-- it occurs to me that maybe he ordered that food only AFTER she caught him speaking Arabic... then claimed she heard him ordering food in Arabic, as a cover story.

People need to calm down over Arabic speakers. There are plenty in Michigan and they aren't scary.

It's not just the fact that he spoke Arabic. And even tho it was chilling to me, how easily he could just straight up LIE about it... still, it's not JUST the fact that he lied about it, either.

It's those 2 things, together, PLUS the fact that he's working for the FBI. PLUS the fact that their team was ALREADY infiltrated a number of times in the first season by corrupt government officials AND terrorist moles.

AND, we already know that the doc is one of a list of five people specifically shown in the season premiere as MAYBE being a mole. So no, I'm not a guy in a camo baseball cap, ignorantly complaining about a foreigner. There are several legitimate reasons why the doctor looks suspicious, and his lying about speaking Arabic is only ONE of those reasons.

Sometimes fires don't go out when you're done playin' with them.

reply

First, it is considered an asset to speak multiple languages at the FBI. Especially important would be those who speak languages that are spoken in areas where there is current unrest, like middle eastern countries.

Second, it never crossed your mind that this doctor speaks to more than just this team? I seriously doubt a real FBI psychologist, or whatever he actually is on this show, would sit around waiting for one of these five people to need to see him. So, he could've been speaking to, say a translator in his official capacity of FBI psychologist and didn't want to break patient/doctor confidentiality. That's what I would've thought, as Patterson.

Third, yes, we do know there's a mole, but the characters, other than Jane, do not. So that comment is irrelevant to this situation.

I'm sure you're a very nice person, but your fears are unfounded that a person speaking Arabic, even at the FBI, is immediately suspicious. And, forgive me, because I don't live for TV or anything, but did he lie, or did Patterson just not know he spoke multiple languages? There are plenty of things I don't know about my coworkers, especially if it's none of my business.

Maybe you should work on your presentation because it truly does sound like your that guy in a camo cap who complains about foreigners. Ask yourself this: if he'd been talking into a phone speaking German, would you have had the same reaction?

No, even the confidentiality issue doesn't give him any reason to LIE to Patterson about using Arabic. Just saying "I have a patient/client who speaks Arabic" is not a violation of anybody's protected health information. The confidentiality relates to identifying info, such as a name, address, or a social security # revealed alongside a person's medical info.

And if that's the case, then WHY didn't he simply say so? "Yes, I do speak Arabic, but I can't really discuss the call, because of confidentiality issues.." That's ALL he would have to say.

Third, yes, we do know there's a mole, but the characters, other than Jane, do not. So that comment is irrelevant to this situation.

No, but Patterson was very close to Mayfair AND she's wanting to date this guy. So it's more personal for her.. even more of a reason to make sure he can be trusted.

I'm sure you're a very nice person, but your fears are unfounded that a person speaking Arabic, even at the FBI, is immediately suspicious.

I just don't agree. Once I consider the fact that he LIED about it so casually, it becomes suspicious. CERTAINLY enough for her to press him for an explanation, and report his behavior if he refused to provide one.

Take the ethnicity out of it... I'd feel the same if they worked at the DEA and she overheard him say something about keeping a large order of strong painkillers a secret-- a comment that could also relate to doctor/patient confidentiality & be perfectly innocent... and yet, he then lied to her & insisted she misheard when she asked about it. That, also, would be immediately suspicious.

And, forgive me, because I don't live for TV or anything...

Okay, now you're just trying to be jerky.

but did he lie, or did Patterson just not know he spoke multiple languages?

He intentionally lied, and his denial was blatantly suspicious. She said she overhead him speaking Arabic and he insisted that he wasn't and that she misheard. She claimed she knew "that was Arabic" and he tried to blow it off by rolling his eyes and saying "If you say so."

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, especially since I'm acting 'jerky' for stating I don't live for TV, which you managed to make a personal insult out of. Good day.

Yes; your implication being that ..ahem, unlike ME, you don't live for tv.

Edit to add: Incidentally...

First, it is considered an asset to speak multiple languages at the FBI.

Turns out, Mayfair had to specifically call in a translator who spoke Arabic, in a season 1 episode-- Oddly enough, it was season 1 episode 20, same episode where Patterson and Borden first discuss the 'Oregon Trail' game, and he begins 'hinting' at an attraction to her.

But why didn't Mayfair have Dr. Borden translate, instead of calling someone in? I think Mayfair should have known there was an Arabic speaker on-site. Clearly, he has gone to lengths to conceal the fact that he can speak Arabic.

reply

I am not going to agree to disagree. I am going to insist on it. You are totally missing the OP's point. The dude flat out lied, for no valid reason. Take your bleeding heart somewhere else, everything you have said is just stupid.

~Oh, I'm well aware it's not a picnic, Mr. Save the Day~ (Fitz, Agents of Shield)

Yup. TV Guide even agrees with us:

http://www.tvguide.com/news/blindspot-season-2-episode-3-review/

In this hour, Patterson "caught" him speaking Arabic to an unknown person over the phone, which he patently denied. That was a clear sign of shifty behavior, which either signals he is Shepherd's mole or an obvious red herring.

EW, as well:

“Hero Fears Imminent Rot” leaves us with a lot of questions. Is Borden’s ability to speak Arabic just part of who he is? Or is there something more sinister there because he denies it when Patterson points it out?

reply

You get to insist on nothing when it comes to my life. You can take your authoritarian heart elsewhere.

It's just a dumb tv show, and one not written extremely well. Lighten up. It's not a documentary.

reply

If the real world was like it should be, she'd have been fired for taking confidential and classified documents (the tattoo stuff) home to her geek boyfriend because they were playing little games by trying to decipher them. David hadn't been vetted by the FBI but even if he was, Patterson's not supposed to be taking work home with her like that. Then again, we've recently seen how the FBI operates in the real world so I guess what Patterson did and continues to do is considered completely harmless and "nothing to see here".

Harvey i agree w/ you 100%.

So your avatar pic isn't true.. you don't "wanna taco bout it"?

Why not read the whole thread, and see how I was NOT just stirring up a fight like a troll-- but engaging in reasoned debate and providing logic to support the basis of my own viewpoint? You're welcome to do the same, too... rather than just labeling me a "troll" to try and discredit me.

Harvey i think Tacolips was calling marissajordan the troll and not you.

reply

Um, not a troll. Disagreeing with someone is not being a troll. But I see how you all try to squelch dissent so I can see I shouldn't bother.

You guys take a tv show Waaaaay too seriously.

reply

Disagreeing with someone is not being a troll.

No--- however... using fallacious arguments, i.e. deliberately ignoring or misrepresenting my actual point:

"...it's just a language people speak, not anything to pee your pants over."

So if I lie about anything, I should,be turned into my boss? Sounds a little too authoritarian to me.

... as if the use of Arabic and the lying were two unrelated issues, deliberately refusing to see how they are connected. Also, sliding in unprovoked personal criticisms...

"You guys take a tv show Waaaaay too seriously."

...and dumping hostile judgement on people with no basis...

You can take your authoritarian heart elsewhere.

--- is certainly in the ballpark of trolling.

But I see how you all try to squelch dissent so I can see I shouldn't bother.

We're not criticizing you over your dissenting opinion -- we're criticizing your method of debate, which is fallacious and hostile.

Sometimes fires don't go out when you're done playin' with them.

Shrug. Sounds like you want to not only dictate how I feel but also how I express that. I have little to no time to fight about inconsequential things like a TV show.

We feel differently, can't we leave it at that? Like I said, it's a TV show. Nothing to,get so worked up over. Seriously, you'll give yourself a heart attack.

reply

Shrug. Sounds like you want to not only dictate how I feel but also how I express that.

Nope. Doesn't sound like that at all. It's not about what you 'feel' it's about your viewpoint, and whether you can provide logic to defend it. --- but as for how you express your view? I'm not taking a tv show seriously-- the subject could be anything; what I DO take seriously is the respect you show -- or not -- in what is supposed to be a mature debate.

I have little to no time to fight about inconsequential things like a TV show.

And yet, you've posted 7 responses to me; most everyone else in the thread only responded once or twice.

We feel differently, can't we leave it at that?

Not when your 'feeling' includes unfounded personal criticisms of me; no. Previously, you said that maybe I should work on my presentation-- That makes it fair-play to criticize YOUR presentation.

Like I said, it's a TV show. Nothing to get so worked up over.

Still wanna complain that I'm dictating how YOU feel?

You're off-base, anyway. This is a discussion board-- I'm discussing. I debate because I enjoy debate. Nothing at all suggests I am 'worked up', here.

Seriously, you'll give yourself a heart attack.

Seriously, that is nebulous and unnecessary. Keep to the topic, if you can.

That in mind:
Ask yourself this: if he'd been talking into a phone speaking German, would you have had the same reaction?

If he spoke German then LIED about it afterward? Yes, I would have had the same reaction.

Shrug. Again, it's a TV show. Calm down.

reply

Yeah and she is suppose to be the "brain" of the whole team. I didn't quite understand how she could've just shrugged her shoulders like that when he straight up lied to her saying "I don't know what you talking about" or something along those lines... its just piss ass poor writing and getting lazy. Now the new lady Nas SUDDENLY finds ALL this information that the Sandstorm group has been watching Weller for 20 years now, if true, I'm sure Jane's "family" will not share this information w/her b/c after all Jane's memory has been erased. I don't trust Nas but don't think she's the mole. I also don't think Weller was talking about Jane when he said something about trusting someone (Jane got all pissy like he meant it about her). Weller was talking about his *beep* father Jane b/c he lied to him over and over for years about Taylor Shaw. Jane shouldn't trust this weird "Sandstorm family" of hers, especially since they have a "devious plan" at play and her brother gives me the creeps especially the way he looks at her - YUCK! Also, WTF was up w/Tasha going to that "Shadow" guy at the end and asking him if he would want to do some "off the book" work for her? I do NOT like her and do NOT like Nas at all.... I think the mole is the shrink-- I wish it was either Tasha or Nas b/c I can't stand them but I don't like the shrink either, he's very creepy; why all of the sudden he's taking a romantic interest in Patterson (who is one of my favorites, love the actress). I'm so sick of the "fugly" looks on Jane's face lately, its driving me crazy; I know she's confused and all but I wish the actress could work on a better "chip on the shoulder/confused look" for a facial expression... so much *beep* up on this show lately, its ALL over the place. Also another favorite of mine besides Patterson, Weller is Reade (I feel really bad for him b/c my husband and I had a mutual friend commit suicide b/c of being molested by a very "high respected authority"; so it hits close to home) I always loved Reade though and Tasha had NO right throwing his friend out like that, I BET he ends up dead; I just want his friend Freddie to at least let Reade know that a female friend or did Tasha say co-worker kicked him out of his apartment - yeah he had drugs w/him so Tasha should've called Reade and told him to come home and handle the situation himself since Tasha had no right doing it herself...Reade would've wanted to know Freddie had drugs on him and he would've been "concerned" for Freddie b/c he's going thru a lot right now. Also the objects on Reade's coffee table were drugs right? I'm having trouble w/my DVR/Remote (one big mess my life) so I couldn't rewind and freeze it on that particular scene.. Sorry my post is so long (and all over the place- like the show is right now). I'm just confused and FULL of questions...

PS I WILL SAY AGAIN CAN'T STAND NAS, TASHA, ROBERT THE SHRINK (CHECK HIS IMDB PAGE - HE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE ON MUCH LONGER; COULD BE WRONG OR WISHFUL THINKING)
