Neither did I when I watched Season 1. I'd never heard of the guy before and hadn't seen him in anything before this show so I looked up his bio here on IMDB. I was shocked to find out he was from Australia because he sounded completely American to me. Some haters on this board contended that his "fake accent" was horrible and "only a moron" could fall for it but I think he does a great American accent. I did see him on "The Tonight Show" a few months ago and he was doing his own Australian accent. He sounds great either way.
His accent is good, but the tells that it's not his original accent are his talking speed and the depth of his voice. Take Hugh Jackman as an example, he also talks more slowly and deeply when he plays American characters. Though, as you say, if you haven't heard him talk differently, you could hardly tell.

I've heard the same thing (speed and depth of voice) about Elyes Gabel on the "Scorpion" board (he plays Walter). I saw Gabel in "World War Z" when he was using his normal British accent but I didn't pay that much attention to the speed and depth but it makes sense that this is what actors do when they're using a different accent. It's probably the same when American actors do a British accent. At any rate, I think Stapleton does a great job with his accent.
Exactly, Gabel does the same thing. British and Australian accents are more high pitched and softer, so the actors have to adjust the tempo and speak more throaty.
