What the Hell Happened to Kim Basinger?

She’s been a Bond girl, Batman’s girlfriend and a corpse in a Tom Petty video. Most recently, she played Zach Efron’s mom. What the hell happened? The easy answer is that Kim Basinger was a sex symbol who got old. But the story of Basinger’s career is far more interesting than the easy answer would lead you to believe.

But if we're not quite in the midst of a Basinger-aissance, there's at least one more role on her docket that's higher-profile than anything she's done in at least a decade. In an elegant bit of casting, next year's Fifty Shades of Grey sequel Fifty Shades Darker has cast Basinger as Elena Lincoln, the "Mrs. Robinson" who seduced the teenaged Christian Grey and paved the way for his sadomasochistic sexual preferences. It's another role that hearkens back to a key touchstone in Basinger's career—in this case, playing a woman in the midst of a sadomasochistic sexual affair in 1986's 9 1/2 Weeks. And if it's yet another sex symbol role in a career that has turned out to be narrower and more limiting than the one Basinger might have chosen — well, at least she’s the one in control.

Women in Hollywood, who are over 50 have a hard time getting better roles because of ageism.
This is my opinion but I think women aren't allowed to age gracefully.

Wasn't Kim Basinger's divorce in the media a lot? She was married to Alec Baldwin.

I really wish she wouldn't of taken the Darker role but I agree with, "well, at least she's the one in control"

And yet...the old guys still get the 25/30 year younger girls...stupid.

Didn't she get sued for backing out of film she signed up for. She ended up bankrupt and there was talk of her being a handful along with Alec Baldwin on the film The Marrying Man.
In some ways she was the cause of her own downfall.

Kim Basinger is still one of my favorite actresses. I wish more people today knew about 9 1/2 Weeks.

Simply put and to be very blunt, Kim’s lack of humility and self-control as well as her fragile ego became her ultimate downfall.

Yep. It's all about hating on women. They must never be portrayed as something other than young, frail, good looking sex objects. All other ospects of femininity must be obliterated. Old guys are still portrayed as sexual in their 60s but God forbid that so are women. Women shouldn't be allowed to have sex with younger counterparts. Only men have that privilege without anyone truly criticizing them. This film is all about the female aspect and men hate that. Porn is the only way that sex must be portrayed as, because it's the male aspect and because it always demeans and ignores women's wishes. This is what all this hate is all about. It's an attack on women's fantasies.

I think Kim Basinger aged well. I think she is still a beautiful woman. What I'm taking issue with in the film is her wardrobe. I never imagined Elena wearing these kinds of suits. Also at the ball, I expected her to wear a black ball gown.

Conservatives, I hear your complaints. What are your solutions?

"Wel, at least she's the one in control".

I think that sums it up perfectly

Reminds me of one of the classic scenes (among many) from "Absolutely Fabulous."

Eddy and Patsy are sitting on Eddy's son's bed having found his stash of girlie mags and they are having a look through one called "Razzle."

They are thumbing through and the ever-PC correct wannabe Eddy stares at one of the two-page spreads in horror, while Saffy her straightlaced daughter stands behind them and is outraged: "That is disgusting! That is SO degrading to women!"

Patsy just leans over and looks and says blandly, "What do you mean? SHE'S got the whip."

Classic.

The 50 discussions remind me sometimes of that--there's Patsy's take and then there is Saffy's take. With Eddy some place inbetween. :-)))

She was kinda of back to form in The Nice Guys.

Whatever you are, be a good one.
