A Better Movie.

First of all, I saw the first movie two years ago, like a lot of people around the world of course. I was attracted in the theater due to the hype which surrounded it and the curiosity. I've always thought that the premise of the movie was quite interesting, adding the BDSM twist to a cliché love story that we've all seen a million times before was a good idea in my opinion and I think that controversial/scandalous movies are a very good thing in cinema. Unfortunately, I didn't like it. I thought it didn't go far enough and the all thing was a bit dull.

BUT, Darker has just been released in France today and I went to see it. And I was quite surprise to see that the movie wasn't bad and even better than the first one.

Of course there are still flaws but I quite liked the new characters and the new problematics of the movie. It is still a bit awkward sometimes but I feel it's part of the atmosphere of the story. Some aspects were a bit botched in my opinion and I wish the movie paid more attention to some serious subjects such the workplace harassment that a lot of women can endure. The scene between Dakota Johnson and her boss (forgot the name of the actor) was very effective and well acted but at the end, I felt like it was almost nothing. They should use that kind of thematics to make a deeper movie.
An another problem: Like I said, the new characters (the three villains) were really cool and creepy but I wish they had more scenes. I mean, three scenes for Kim Basinger?

Yes, it is darker but definitely SEXIER. Finally. That's what I call an erotic movie.
And by the way, I thought that Dakota Johnson was impressive. She's a good actress to start with but she gives a lot of herself, the way she exposes her body in this one. This is a true performance in my opinion.

Fans will love it, for sure. Non-fans maybe not (well, I'm sure they won't) but there's still a lot of improvement. The writing is better too I must say.

So definitely not a masterpiece, if you can choose go see Moonlight (haha) but that was not bad.

(A huge + to Dakota Johnson)

OH and I forgot one thing: There's a scene which involved a sex toy in this one and I thought that it was really well made. It's awkward and really funny in the same time, it's a good thing when this movie doesn't take itself too seriously.

I think most of the fans of the books will agree Darker is a better story..and Freed will be the same.

Do we see Kim basinger get b-slapped by christians mom? :)

reply

Yep and it's incredibly satisfying to watch.

reply

Yes, we do but like I said, I wished we could have more scenes with her to hate her even more.

Is Elena in the third one? Or no?

Are the sex scenes more graphical than the first one?

reply

Yes definitely. Way more sexier in my opinion.

Hi itstom, a friend saw it last night. While she admired the production values and the cinematography, she didn't care for the pacing or the dialogue which she felt was weak. In her opinion the film had the look of a glossy music video. She liked both Johnsons, Dakota and Eric, but didn't care for Jamie Dornan. Since the screening was for reviewers and not for fans of the novels, there was a lot of tittering throughout.

I will upfront admit that I'm one of those in the prefers the films in comparison to the books camp. Much to my surprise i liked the sequel slightly more than the last film and i particularly loved the surprising yet heartbreaking way they chose to begin the movie. My problem with the film would be that they've packed in so much story wise that they don't allow enough breathing room for the story to flow naturally so in my opinion it needed to at the very least 2 and a half hours but thats just my opinion someone may think differently.

Hi d-rowe-1. I didn't care for the novels particularly, but like the conversation around them. I personally think cable would have been the right medium for Fifty Shades. My friend did like the look of the movie and though Dakota was very natural and had a charming on-screen presence, Jamie Dornan not so much.
