Dry and dull

Really went into this one with an open mind but the movie overall was dull.

Really?..the Masquerade Ball?..his old bedroom?..the sail boat?..the kitchen showdown with Elena? Mama Grace defending her cub..are you a book fan?...so many things we looked forward to were there.

Hi SyrixBlaze, I listened to a broadcast from some film reviewer friends. None of them liked Jamie Dornan which seems to be a carry over from the first film. They felt there simply was no real passion between the two leads and absolutely no dramatic tension. The characters would fight and suddenly all their problems disappeared and they'd jump into bed. I have heard that the photography was nice and Dakota looked better than she did in the first film.

reply

I agree. A lot of the criticism I hear is that the two leads are bad actors. I think it more has to do with the fact that they are just not compatible. Perhaps if that other guy (I forgot his name) who was originally cast would of been better.

I rate this film 2.5/5. Which is a lot better than the RT score of 9%.

Hi mockingjay-60206. Both Dakota and Jamie Dornan are talented actors. They simply don't have chemistry with each other, and I doubt casting anyone else would have made a lick of difference. It's the material and the writing and I doubt anyone could make it anything other than what it is, pretty to look at, but empty.

reply

I actually disagree , I thought that they had a much better chemistry this time . Both are talented actors but I like them together , for me , it did worked. Just wish that the writting was better.

Hi Souleiado1, nice to see you on this board. The screenwriter for this film was E.L. James's husband. He used her crappy dialogue and weak plot lines. You can only do so much with bad material.

I saw it and yeah...I had fun, laughing I guess? For anyone who tells me that its a beautiful, love story...*beep* off. It was the cheesiest, corniest, most awkward-comedic film. But hey, it worked for a great comedy where the jokes on the film. Seriously, the scenes were so bad you couldn't help but laugh. I think FSoG was better in the aspect to take it a bit more "serious" than FSD. This film completely did not give a *beep*, I was disappointed that the plots and other characters (Mrs. Robinson, Jack Hyde, Leila) were weak! It had potential to explore more of these arcs, but it didn't. It was dull and so rushed! Everything was rushed. Even the sex! I'm not expecting full-blown porn but cut the soundtrack songs out, more positions (not just missionary all the time), and please bring in some foreplay. How can a movie about risque intimacy not show good foreplay. Why does Christian always have an un-emotional face while having sex? No climax either? In the books, wasn't he always grinning (or proudly smiling) for his accomplishment in giving Ana orgasms? For getting off too? None of that...it cuts straight to the next scene. Man...

So, 5/5?

5/5 in that I laughed, yes. 0/5 in capturing romance, great plot twists, BDSM and chemistry. It can't be taken seriously. I was walking out and a lot of the viewers thought that it did poorly in capturing the book. Like sure, the sex was there, but that connectivity...intimacy... was not. It was like : fight, bang (sex). Argument, bang. Present, bang again. It was repetitive in the sense of just make-up sex all the time. Also, Ana pissed me off. She doesn't know what she wants in the film. Its like she can't take Christian's dark ways and not kidding, mere minutes later she's okay with it, without any solidifying reason . She tries so hard to be her own woman, but really ends up being Christian's (and not in the cute way like "Oh, I'm his girl *googly-eyes*) I feel that FSoG (2015) did a better job in where Ana had control and it made sense. Here it's wishy-washy.

reply

Well I figured I wouldn't be the only one who felt this way. I think the major issue is the director or whoever not doing a good job of turning the book into a movie.

reply

At some point we have to stop blaming the directors and just admit the source material sucked major monkey balls. In the meantime, if you happen to find someone who can thoroughly shine a piece of crap into a nugget of gold, be sure to send him my way ;-)
